ooooooooh, right up my alley, QD. For all purpose, the 229. Its about the same size as an abu 7000, but the newell is a real man's reel, no levelwind.

Numbskull uses one all the time. I love it because I can hear where he is in the pitch dark. Newells have a real distinctive sound. WHRRRRRR!!!!!!
Tough reels.
|
Why even try.........

Flap,
You failed to mention that on the retrieve it sounds like a coffe grinder, at least mine do. I love them though.

A P220 or P229. I like the 229 the best, especially if using mono.

I like the 235 for 30lb mono and big tackle, the 229 for 20-25 mono. I don't like them with braid (saw through my thumb).

I was thinking about a squidder because of price, but the newell have a faster retreive, plus they will cast further so I hear. I am not sure if the Newell should be my first conventional.

thats why they call it fishing not catching

The 235 which is bout the same size as a squidder is easier to handle for some reason.I can't explain it.It's lighter.perhaps thats it.The faster retrieve seems to keep the line neater on the spool.plus comes in handy when a fish runs in towards ya an there's a rock in the way.
Don't be a scared of the no level wind feature.paying the line on with ur thumb will become second nature in no time.Plus it is a great advantage on feel.I do this thing when jigging where i impart this subtle action with my thumb.Killa..On the distance casting thing I think u could hop up a squidder to cast just as far.As a novice bait caster u probably would want to forgo that.Just set um up so's u don't birdsnest as easy. Then work it from there.A 7000 abu is not a bad reel either. probably a little less than the Newell. It's a little larger than the 235.Probably around the same line capacity. It's can be set up so no professional over-runs occur. So in that sense it can be considered more user friendly.

The 229 is probably the most versatile size. Works well with either 25# mono or 65# braid.
The 220 is good if you use braid, but it's a little thin in capacity for mono over 20#, and margainal with 20.
The 235 is best used with heavy mono or 80# braid.
And spend the extra dough for the P-series, with the aluminum spool and frame, and all metal handle

I have the 235. Stock drag from Newell was horrid when I bought mine.
Maybe improved? Swapped out to smoothies and then to Penn's HT drag where it works fine.
Decent customer service from Newell. Had one of the spool bearings get rusted, made a call and had two of the newer style bearings sent out for free.

I use a 220 for distance plugs (pencils, tins) and a 235 for bait.

Same here. My 235 dates back to the mid-80s and the drag wasn't the greatest.
But my new P-series 220s and 229 have a fantastic drag
