clip on lightning detector---
saw it in a catalouge, according to mfg., detects lightning upto 40 miles away, audible alarm sounds when lightning is within striking distance and color LED shows direction of storm, $79.
Imho worth it ,especially for the jetty guys holdin grafhite lighting rods over their heads.

Most jetty guys are nuts and would want to recalibrate it so it goes off at a mile.

Flash, then "one-onethousand, two-onethousand....." If I don't make it to "15-onethousand" without hearing the boom, it's time to go. 3 miles or less, that's plenty close for my liking.

this thread is pretty funny..
one time I saw lighting on the horizon so I packed it in, as I was getting in my car like 10 minutes later the sky opened up and the lighting came down.... moved in pretty damn quickly!!
that's why it's good to have a glass rod.. those don't conduct electricity right???

I was at a breachway last year and a beautiful show was occuring over the ocean. I was landing alot of fish between 20-27 inches on my seven footer having a blast the night of my lifetime for fishing ( i just started) My fiance looks at me and says " we have to leave"
This was my first best night out on the breachway and i felt like the priest in caddie shack " This is the best game of my life" She dragged me away and on the way home a tree feel in front of us after being hit by lighting... I turn to her and say " it's a good thing I kept us out there a little longer right hunniee......" LOL i wanted to fish all night long in that storm

Regardless, metal guides and salt-water saturated fishing lines do

Lightening can ark 10 miles from the storm in some circumstances.
It scares the heck out of me.

Last I knew trees didn't conduct either... They get hit by lightning just fine.

yep , been there! Also when the rod starts discharging static like wool sweater on a dry day.
Anyway , I have experienced that static build up many times on the west wall and assorted breachways.
About two years ago , a guy I worked with was killed by lightning while fishing on a fresh water lake in maine. it does happen!!

Spence is right - it can get you from more than 10 miles away.
If you can see/hear it, you're probably already in "strike range" ....
