Mantis Shrimp

RI Jimmy joined me this morning. We had a very slow start this morning (2 hours-nada). NNE wind, rain and a decent chop made drifting difficult. Moved to deeper water and the bite started warming up. Caught a few bass on one drift w/ bucktail and pork. Scanning the water to the north, BINGO, birds working the water. Started the drift north of the action in 30 ft of water. The fishfinder lit up with bait. Layers of squid from 15-30 feet of water…game on. We boated several marginal keepers and a few larger fish finished up the morning nicely.

I figured the bass would be full of squid. No squid in the belly, just mantis shrimp. The whole belly was full of large freshly eaten shrimp. Timing is right for mantis shrimp spawning season.
Jim and I had a blast, screaming and laughing like kids at the zoo. Man, I really love striped bass fishing.
