Long Leaders and spinning gear...

After seeing the edge video on how easy braid (ALL BRAID) gets B*&^ slapped on a rock I did some serious thinking about my line (suffix 50)... I just like it too much to go back to Mono, but obviously, it has a serious flaw, in it's abrasion resistance. In the past I've tried a long shock leader to get my main line out of the rocks, all to no success as the knot ALWAYS got worn and eventually broke of while slapping a guide. But I decided to try it again.

Here's what I've found. IF you tie the shock leader so you get a few wraps around the spool IT WILL NOT WORK for very long. You can here the knot spanking the guides. BUT, if you tie it short enough so that it falls about a foot short of the spool, it flows through the guides very nicely. I have fished it for a few nights with NO sign of weekness at the end of the night. I tie an alberto knot to connect line to leader. I have been fishing a 9' rod with VERY SMALL guides, and about a 12 foot leader.

Hope this helps others who like me, love there braid, but want the abrasion resistance of Mono. This gets you close...

Interesting idea. I gave up on the idea after hearing that knot hit every guide on the way out. Maybe a second shot is in order.

The line manufacturers need to get to work on a mono coated braid. I'd happily sacrifice some casting distance to keep the braid sensitivity...

That was a a particularly brutal chunk of granite, SOME rocks will have minimal effect on the braid, but at the same time the wrong rock spells instant death.

It would be nice if they could make all the braids in hollow core like they do the 130#. Then you could maybe splice your leader on instead of tying, I dont know how that would work though consider the difference in mono and braid diameter.

U know I liveline herring with 20 lb mono direct to the hook. Herring really can't pull the weight of a heavier line..It scare's the sh!t out of me.
I have had more big fish break me off right at my feet.I understand the test's an how they seem to work I still think in a fishing application give me 30 lb fireline..
Does 50 lb suffix cast better than 30 lb fireline.I might want to try it on my canal setup..
