Saw this yesterday on top of "Brewster Spit" in Boston Harbor and couldn't resist stopping to laugh and take a few pics.
Earlier that morning I notices a coast guard helicopter that came out of Boston hovering over this area for quite a long time!
I hope no one was hurt but this is another case of more $$$ than brains !!!

as a lifelong sailor, i am having a hard time figuring out what happened here.

It is hard to believe is from a typical grounding. How much tide is there?

Is it possible she broke free from her morring?

Does anyone know the story?

I am not sticking up for sailors, there are plenty of idiots out there in boats of every type. I just can't figure out what happened.

The line off the bow looks like it may have come off a mooring but who knows. I'm not even going to comment on the "blow boat" thing. I gew up sailing on a Pearson 26'. Nothing like cruising without the sound of motors and the smell of fuel.

I'm wondering,
What kind of $$$ would you guess this boat is worth?
This boat I'm guessing is 50 - 60 ft or more, and looked to be fairly new.

As for what happened,
My best guess, the person didn't know the area or maybe someone had too much to drink !
This spit is a bit submerged at high tide.
As for it coming off a mooring, no chance, this spot is Boston outer harbor.

Less than what you paid for your powerboat and fuel in the past 3 years.

More like 30-35.

You must not listen to the typical Seatow traffic each weekend for you to make the 'educated' comment.

Well I heard the owner was looking for a way to scrape the bottom and repaint it! Must of been one of those big minus tides.....

No way, I took the pics from far away and it's much more than 35.
The 2 guys in the skiff came off a mid 30ft boat anchored that was atleast 1/2 the size of it.

More like they anchored somewhere, left the boat, and dragged, thats an anchor line off the bow.
There's also nothing on the bow roller.

I can't imagine anyone anchoring in this area.

I was out both days and saw this on Saturday on my way to and from cohasett.

I hate seeing things like this whether it's a power boat or a sail boat. Boating is expensive enough. I just hope nobody was hurt or worse. But this should be a good lesson to all of us who either own boats or are invited as guests that there can be an eliment of danger if you let your guard down even for a minute.

If you're a boater and haven't taken a safety course you might want to look into it.

If you have taken a safety course it's never a bad idea to take a refresher in the off season.

I hope all worked out for this unfortunate boater and that the damage was minimal and all involved uninjured.

Hey Ron...saw that one too! I have personally seen several boats run aground in this area; have waved off numerous idiots about to run aground and have even had to go in and give one fool (and his girlfriend on the bow

)hand signals to steer him out of danger. I find it unbelievable that many "boaters" run around the harbor with no knowledge of the hazards, no charts, no depth sounder, etc. With boats in the 5-6 $$ figure range I would think they would spring for a chart plotter rather than that "must have" stainless marine grill, flag pendant or the 30 packs that they must be drinking!

The tri-channel marker in the Back River/Q'Bay channels is another bar that guys try to short-cut across and end up in the same predicament. Trying to save one minute travel and end up sitting high and dry for 12 hours. Makes no sense.

Definitely keep the tape measure and scale handy.
Its most likely a Valiant 32.

probably worth around $50K when floating upright.

Also, FYI, that is the kind of boat that a retired husband and wife may sail around the world in.

It is not the kind of boat that your 'sailboat yuppy' has cocktails in on a sunny friday afternoon.

I was coming in off Stellwagon bank yesterday around 5 PM and was met by a coast gaurd vessel just off the mouth of the Merrimac. I thought I was up for another boarding. He then told me that he had a sinking vessel up ahead and asked me to stay very clear. we looked ahead and saw the last 4 or 5 feet of a boat's bow sticking out of the water bobbing up and down. Anyone hear what happened to this one?

I used to sail on the Valiant 40 that took all the marbles in Marblehead-Halifax.

Fish On: That boat in the Merrimac was like a 19-20 foot lake boat. Guess the yahoo's had like 8-9 aboard! Heard all are well. As far as sailboats go.......We call them "workboats". Too much work for me.

i am not too familiar with the Vinyard Vixen, but i looked one up on YW and it looks very close. Especially in the ass...

Now that is a beautiful boat. Is it me or do sailboats just look so much nicer than power boats? That looks really close to the pic of the boat in this post.

I remember in about 90 seeing a Carver 40 something up on Nix's Mate. Spent the next year on stands at Marina Bay well holed in the hull...

Take a look at the stern, I now have my doubts about the VV, it has an extended setup for the backstay.
