Question Is this combo ok for the surf???

Went down to the "local" tackle shop to get a couple rods/reels so we could take my father-in-law fishing off a pier. (He's in a wheel chair.)

Ended up with a coule PENN Power Graph II PG3000 spinning reels and 2-piece, 8', Medium PENN Newport NPSF 802S M Rods.

I'm not sure how good these rods/reels are but they seem to be fine for snappers off the pier. They were also billed as a good, versitle combo that can be used in the surf...

Eventually I'll look into a better rod/reel but I'll make due for now. What do you guys / gals think? Please be honest!

Thanks,
Rob

Probably ok for what you want them for and will also double as a shorter surf rod. But more than the surf, they would be more suited to jetty and pier fishing. The best input I can offer is to clean them good with a thorough wash down after each use. These reels are not as corrosion resistant as some of the higher end Penn reels. But they are economical and will get you by for a while. Later on, you may want to look into an upgrade to a 7500SS or competitive equivalent. Good Luck and get him into some fish.
