spheros owners
i'm breaking down my spheros reels for cleaning. the roller clutch assembly doesn't sound as smooth as when i got it. it seems not glide as well along the bearing that sits inside it.
does anyone put a small amount of lube there for less friction. or will that screw up the drag system.

I own a few Spheros 8000's and I love them. However, I have never had to do much more than a simple flush of soapy hot water after every trip and a nice lubing a few times a summer. I haven't encountered your particular issue. Sorry!
That being said, I now use my VS 200 95% of the time and the Spheros reels have become back-ups. (although for the money they are a GREAT reel)
VS is the only way to go!  |

sorry... I don't own one, but I would try adding a drop or two. I really don't know too many guys that own em. Other thing about this site is that if you check the # of people logged in at one time it is never that many so give it some time and someone who has one might chime in. Oh, and I don't have a van staal  |

I own a couple, best braid reel there is and I own more expensive reels but never have a problem with braid on those reels. That being said every once and awhile I remove the roller assembly, push the small bearing out of the plastic ring it sits in and give it a bath it Liquid wrench, free it up and brush it down with an old toothbrush, then I clean off any junk on the plastic ring the bearing sits and then rinse off the liquid wrench with a good dose of WD-40 then wipe it down as best you can and a couple drops of Reel Butter oil and bingo, as good as new. Then Liquid Wrench really does a nice job on freeing up bearings, course you should replace them each year if you fish hard. Hope that helps.

I just purcahses a Spheros from a friend after not owning one for a few years. The reason I did is because they were always great with braid and though I love the Stradics for a variety of reasons, in the sand, I remember them to be a bit more resistant to sandy type of issues. Living on the Cape I fugured I would get one back in the rotation and see if I remember correctly.
Vs are great reels but let''s be honest, they are just too much money for most to use across the board. I have one because I regularly fish the areas they were designed for.

One of the best and simplest reels out there.
Superlube for grease on the gears.Sentry Solutions on everything else.My 8000 is a 1st year production reel that's about to get abused within the hour till the sun rises for the umpteenth time.

I own both a spheros 8000 and a VS 150. I'll be honest, the last few times out, the VS has become by back-up reel.
The Spheros handles braid much better and I prefer it when fishing eels b/c it has a bail and the VS does not. Plus, I have an extra spool for the spheros that I fill with mono - which I use alot this time of year in the rocks. I'll be brutally honest, the drag on the spheros is awesome and very smooth as is the VS.
I just add superlube inside the body and lubricant to the moving parts as stated above. I thnk the advise above will serve you well on your reel.
