 I have been reading up on this until my eyes are watering. HD vs BlueRay, 1080i vs 1080p 1080p/24/32 etc on many different sites. After all this (way too much wasted time...my wife came to check to see if I was OK!) I have decided to go with a HD format that does up-converting on SD's and does 1080i. Also while my TV is fairly new (about a year and a half) I don't have a direct 1080p input anyway and I don't even think there are any 1080p movies.
Personally I feel that this blue ray vs HD is a moot point anyway. Few movie companies will support only one format exclusively and I checked out those combo players and while they looked interesting I think in the end the movie will simply be offered in both formats (probably on the same disk). If they do I will just view it in SD and upconvert it. This stuff goes obsolete so fast anyway that it really does not matter. So my hd will be 1080i for the next few years...whew! I am glad I made a decision...I don't have this trouble with fishing equipment! |

Sony owns the Blue ray rights, it's their proprietary version of HD. If you think studios will carry both, think again. Disney is owned by Sony, they are Blu Ray only, there was an article listing which studios are doing bluray only, which are doing hidef, and which if any are doing both. I have Blu Ray and love the picture, not to mention that both Netflix, and Blockbuster online rent them.

Luckily for me my family has outgrown most things Disney, I'll just have to watch it in up-converted SD or broadcast HD (which is where I get most of my HD anyway) I rarely rent movies anymore, I did the netflix and BB thing for years and moved on a couple years ago. IN the end PPV or On Demand will end the rental industry IMO. That said, I hate format wars like this. I believe "most" studios make money selling movies not players and will want to offer them in as many formats as possible.
Combo units are a not bad idea I just couldn't justify it for my needs. If blue ray becomes the be all and end all format, I will get a Blueray player or watch it thru a video game player.

Warner bros has anounced that it will no longer offer HD DvD format instead going with Bluray..
