Document Management Systems

I don't know if anyone has any experience with document management systems or could recommend a product for me to look into further. We're looking to set up a technical document repository that would be accessed probably by no more than 200 people. Mostly it would be for read only access, with a handful of document creators and contributors. Access would be from within our company as well as remote access by vendors and technicians. Ideally, we'd like to have a setup where there would be a master area for all documents, however smaller areas could be set up for folks only needing to see certain documents, but not the full blown library. We'd like control over security, document numbering and version control, printing, maintaining or linking new or changed documents to the different areas that were set up.
Well if anyone has a name I'd sure appreciate knowing the name. We've been trying to make it work with a product called QuickPlace, but it's just not quite up to the task.
