Question How many miles long is the Cape Cod Canal?

In the Fisherman Mag. this week there is an article about the canal and it says the canal is 17.4 miles long. Is that right? seems like it's shorter to me.

That 17.4 figure applies to the length of the navigation channel, including the 10 miles or so run out into Buzzards Bay, to Cleveland's Ledge Light. The land cut---from the end of the State pier at the Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay to the tip of the Scusset Breakwater--is 7.7 miles long.

Can #1 off the east end to Cleveland's Ledge Light---17.4 miles.

Tip of Scusset Breakwater to State Pier----7.7 miles.

Red face

About that article last night, why have I never heard any of you Ditch types affectionately describing the use of 8 foot rods in there? I always thought you regulars wouldn't be caught with anything less than 9-10 feet

And letting your live herring swim 100 yards down current?

John most guys fish with 9 to 10 footers but there are a few that throw shorter rods but rarely longer. As for drifting herring most times it never makes it that far but there are always the Googans to make the fishing interesting.

When I was a kid, the most common jig/skin rod was an 8-1/2' Harnell 540.

ditch length

Found the attached 'map' at the Cape Cod Tackle site several months ago when I was planning my safari north but can't seem to attach it - ha ha ha .
It can be found under the maps link section at www.capecodtackle.com/
Don't know if it helps since you guys know all this stuff but I like the labeling of spots with their common names ---'the jungle' etc.

Just got my copy of the NE edition. Nice article----but, if you don't mention jigging as a productive method, you're selling the place short.

'Course, I have my own opinion of what Fisherman article was THE definitive work on the piece
