Newport area, squidding and boats
My folks used to sqid off the GI bridge in Newport all the time. Its sounds like it gets pretty packed these days. If I remember correctly, it usually starts around Mothers day in may. A few questiosn fro those in the know...
I'd love to take the wife and kiddies...
Is it possible to go for them from a boat? Do the squid feed around the plings of the bridge or is that just the best shore access to fsih for them?
Is daytime fsihing possible?
Any advice is, as always, appreciated!

Take your boat under the Newport Bridge in mid May, nite is best with a light of course but the day can be productive.

If you have any flood lights etc on the boat that would be the time to use them.

During that time of year when they're in that thick, YES - there is definately a day-bite. It's not as heavy as the night bite but it definately exists. I think during the light hours they cover more water where as at night, they tend to circle the area that they've infested for longer periods of time and feed more heavily.
I believe their attraction to lights at night is due in part to more easily spotting the bait from below as when early in the season, some of the little buggers they feed on zip across the surface of the water. I would also imagine your fishfinder to be helpful as they swim in massive waves/schools at that time of the season.

I hate doing it in the boat, what a mess!! I do it from sure, go eachnight fill a 5 gal pal and in a few nights you have pleanty bait for the season, and some nice dinners   |

i agree with MJ, too messy for the boat, especially when the action is just as good from shore. Come with use to the GIC, Jimmy. It is actually a lot of fun. I still have frozen squid from last year in the freezer...

You will be lucky to see one person with the the 1.99 jig. However the next time that same person will have the Yozuri jig like the other hundred jiggers. I've been that route and learned. Light tackle, no leaders, doppler loops to jigs and a one ounce at the end.
The OTW this month shows the florescent 1.99 jig tied in series to the Yozuri then the weight. Flash a light on the florescent jig every 10 min.

when I was a kid we'd buy the larger jigs with the double row of hooks and pull them apart, use tubing and white or yellow electrical tape and make two jigs out of the one, we'd head to Navy pier II and fill our buckets, they liked the slower sink and the taste of electrical tape I think, ahhh the good old days...

I have a bunch of old 1.99 jigs. I was thinking of taking the rows of hooks off them and gluing them to some old freshwater rapalas or other minnow bodied lures. Then break off the lip. They'd look pretty close to the Yozuris. There is no "action" to the squid jigs so I think it would work......

the yozuri jigs have action.
not exactly the same way you would describe action of a swimming lure, but they do not drop simply up and down....

ok, my second choice is to craft miniature submarines with some hooks. The squid may think they're giants like in 20,000 Leagues under the Sea and try to grab the little Capt. Nemo ship!
