Team Striped-Bass.Com Wins Surf Challenge
Attention everybody,
Striped-Bass.com just won the 2002 Surf Club Challenge. It seems that master plug builder John Haberek has been a force to be reckoned with over the past several tournaments; his solo performances have led teams to victory in the past, and this year was no exception. The Hab’s guy weighed in an impressive 50 pounds of the total 80+ pounds it took to win. The young apprentice Tattoo contributed some healthy linesider weight, as did Krispy…it was a fine team effort! JohnR was there for moral support and yours truly to document this fine victory.
I think these pictures capture a bit of the action and some of the fun that was had by all.
ProJo.com should have the exact totals and will be doing a recap article.

The conditions were nowhere this nice throughout the contest. The sunrise was beautiful and so was the afternoon that followed.
See you there next year.

Good timing! Yep, the Von Stached one was the big "weigher" for S-B (and he'll be glad to mention that the fish came on his plugs ) . Funny, the lightest guy weighs the most fish - Sweet job John!
Fisheye, those surf pictures are great! Any from the night before? They REALLY don't show the scene of Saturday night and wouldn't want anyone to think it was a pleasant stroll on the beach . There were 6-8' curlers blasting the Hill and a REAL hard but warm wind the night before. Just an amazing transformation of weather in just a few hours.
Truly an awesome weekend with the weather & conditions that will stay in my mind for many days - incredible (it's also incredible that I didn't get knocked down out there, one spot had the wind pushing me on my heels )....
Great pics!

Hey Fisheye - that image was the general idea... Wish I had brought my camera to get a pic of what it looked like at 10 PM from the shore. We were on the east side of the light and I was fishing almost exactly where Habs is standing in that sunrise pic above. I could get maybe 30 feet out with an eel if lucky. The waves were rolling in from the right, and fast. Big surf, great expanses of white water and a howling wind. With the light from the full moon, it almost looked like a winter snow seen, just so much white. At the next spot is was just more of the same except there was no light house or rock wall sheltering us from the win. Almost right in the teeth type wind stacking wave on top of wave. Truly the most spectacular and awesome weather I've fished in. Not the best for fishing, but the strongest total package weather I've ever climbed out to do battle in. Was fun, and still relatively safe as we hadn't taken any extreme risks for the fish.... Just a blast.
Hey, Tattoo, Krispy, & Hab's deserve the Kudos on the fish! And thumbs up for everyone else that had the chance to show up and represent S-B
Specialist, that hat can't get a closeup on S-B here, PETA might take offense (well, hell with them anyway), but otherwise, just common deceny won't allow it.

Congradulations to the S-B team, even leader John R who slept in and missed this mornings beautiful sunshine. Big props to Habs,Tattoo & Krispy. I was raised to beleive that the most important sign indicating a good fisherman is that he/she can find the best fish available when the fishing is bad. That is exactly what you guys did, so hat's off for a job well done.
Just a comment on my comment that the fishing was Bad. The largest Bass of the Tournament was 18 pounds and the largest Blue was 12. With the numbers of quality anglers fishing the amount of quality waters fished, the fishing was BADDD. The experience was great, the weather was a sight to behold, and the people are still top notch.

Hehehe, yo Patrick, I could have called it an early night at a mere 1am and been up in time relatively rested - Actually, you and Bob made the right call with the 1 am sleep and am last-ditch fishing effort, I was just wiped in the morning. I was guilty of spending too much time chasing after the one that got away that night...
It was a blast

Had a good time in spite of the conditions. Great to hear that Team S-B won it. Thanks HABS and Tattoo for puttin' up some fish for us.
John, on the way home I realized that Charlie don't carry that gaff around for no reason I also realized that we could use a couple of "End Restriction" signs on 95 and 295 for the 1AM trips home.......

Congratulations to S-B.com. Way to go guys. It sounds like the weather really turned from late Friday night when it was almost glass calm. I wanted to get out again Sat. night, but by the time we got back, got the kids to bed, my wife got sick (still sick ), it just didn't happen. Obviously you didn't need my help anyway. Hey John, how many years has S-B.com had a team in the tourney? just wondering. Anyhow - great job!

Carl - that was the second year we fished that tourney, last year I think three or four of us fished it. I've fished it in the past for MSBA but usually only one night.

Congrats to SB
When I was told of the conditions of Sat. night I bagged any idea of going up period!
I don't even know if the CT Surfcasters even weighed a fish? I really wanted to go too. Next year hopefully.
Were there a lot of guys at the breakfast ceromony?
