Snug Harbor / Pt. Judith

I have rented a house with a slip on Pt. Judith Pond for next week and I will have my boat there. I currently keep my boat in Boston Harbor and know nothing about the fishing and fishing regs in RI. Can any of you RI guys help?
- What are the fluke and striper regs?
- Are there any really good places to take the kids to from there?
- Any local info would be appreciated
I have never fluke fished, so any tips would be nice. You can PM me.

that is a very good place, especially with a slip. what kind of boat?

It is a 21 ft. Neptune walk-around with a 150 outboard.

your options are many.

for fluke: books could be written on the subject. for starters, head out of the pond, through the west gap, and just start heading west until you see the fleet, usually somewhere in 40-70 ft of water off greenhill, charlestown or westerly. use squid strips. i'm sure if you do a search here for "fluke rigs" you will find load of info.

for bass/blues. focus around the walls of the harbor refuge (just outside of the pond)to start. then you may want to make a run to block island if you are really into it. live eels at night or at least dawn and dusk will be your best bet, or a lot of guys will chum & chunk around the walls with good success. if you do go to block, do a search and you will find a lot more specific good info.

bonito/albies: you may find these fast guys around the walls too. use deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&, or other flashy quick retrieve lure and have fun!

salt pond: there may be some fluke inside the pond, it will never hurt to try your luck. there is also good clamming, a couple of neat islands to explore for the kids, and great areas for general on the water fun. but the fishing is mostly outside of the pond this time of the year.

Another thought is that you may want to take a half day fluke charter on one of the Frances boats the first day you are there. they are great for kids, and you will pick up the basics about fluke fishing, including the general area of where to go. they won't break the bank either.

Snug Harbor's a pretty easy place to get in and out of with the boat for fuel.

If you go down the Galilee escape road, there's the big state ramp right at the end on the right. Use the ramp on the right side, as the one on the left is shallow and doesn't drop off very quickly(it's only usable at low tide). The place can be a zoo on the weekends, so get there early! Snug's across the pond and slightly north from there. From Snug, you'll have quick access to the open water and the west gap.

If you're staying in Snug Harbor there is a public ramp you can use at the end of Gooseberry. It has zero parking, so you will need somebody to dump you at the ramp and then take the trailer away. It is on a channel so the current can be tricky if its running, and there is a bit of a drop off at low tide. Otherwise the Town ramp at the top of the pond on Salt Pond Rd is closer than Galilee.

Look for hickory shad at dawn and dusk in the pond for the kids, lot of scup around outside too.

Thanks for the info on the ramps. From Google Maps, we will be staying close to Gooseberry, so I can put in there. The house has a slip, so I only need to go in and out one time.

Do you use Kastmasters for hickory shad? What can you use for scup?

Shad- shad darts....basically a small colored jig.
Scup- scup rigs with tiny piece of squid...focus on rock piles...

As the guys have stated, and there is a ramp near Ram Point right off Rte 1. Good luck, be safe, and have fun. BTW, watch the tides when leaving or returning, the gut at the end of the river can have some tricky waters, especially if the ferry is close by.
