With the fall season just around the corner......are you getting ready to hit it hard?? (Redlite excluded!) Has your season been as you expected thus far???

Good thread Larry! The season has gone by pretty quick. I haven't fished as much as I said I was going to although that should change in the fall. I also caught my personal best # 37lbs. I really enjoy fishing the fall run becuase of the weather, and in my experiences the better fishing, so I'll be looking forward to that.

This spring was a slow one for me. I didn't get out as much as I wanted. The summer is a different story. I have a few new spots and the old ones are producing mostly when expected. I am eagerly anticipating the fall though. I am going to "The End" this fall for the first time. I also plan on branching out a bit more in searching locations.

The season is far from over !
But I am looking forward the cooler weather so I can fish in t shirt and shorts with the heat blasting in the my new boat while watching every other boater freeze their arses off !!!

The spring was very good the summer was not so good biggest fish 41 inches.The amount of time and money I spent this year I exppected it to be better hoping for my biggest fish this fall gonna still hit it hard.Unfortunetly i'm having a lot of problems with rods,reels.and don't know if I will be able to fix it this year,i'll find a way.

this has been my best year yet. it is only my third year seriously fishing hard but everything ive learned is paying off. got my biggest, though not a monster, 18 lbs. really counting on the fall to break that 20 pound mark. have caught lots of fish in the teen class compared to 1 last year and none the year before so things are getting better. thanks to everyone here whos answered questions for me

Hasn't been a bad year.Lately has actally been real good.
I htought I've put in some decent time this summer and maybe I have,but recently I heard the Boston Celtics already are starting to practice which has put a sense of urgency into play. More fishing needed. The last thing I want is to look out the window with the snow coming down and think I should have gone one more time...

I want to echo Nklinesider's sentiments...This is my 4th year fishing seriously from shore and it has been my best year yet. Still haven't caught that monster I've been searching for, but know it will come.

Considering the limited time I've had to fish due to the weather and shooting for the gold medal in the Father of the Year competition, the quantity of bass I have caught thus far has far exceeded my total in previous years.

Thank you to all of the members of this forum for answering some of the questions I have had and for sharing so much valuable information.

The best is yet to come, looking at my calendar there are still three solid months of fishing left, personally I can't wait for summer to be over. Granted this summer was better than the last several fish wise but if summer has been that good what can we expect for the fall?

Yesterday I spent the day watching bait run along an outer Cape beach while sitting under a beach umbrella with my wife, this is a beach that a lot of people have decided not to buy stickers for anymore, I am glad I made the choice to and still will as long as we can go out there.

The boats just out of casting range were doing well on bass, we watched them with binoculars and later in the morning with the naked eye.

But I have had enough of summer, let school start and the crowds thin, access is restored in daytime with no parking fees or launch fees, the nights get a little longer and the water cools and my vacation goes from September 19th to Oct 6th.

Last fall the night before Thanksgiving Sauerkraut and I were catching bass on almost everycast, a week later they were still there.

The season isn't gone, it's in progress and still has a long way to go.

In regards to the stickers and folks not buying them anymore.....I can only speak for myself but I am sure many agree, with the prolonged beach closures, the damn birds, the friggin seals, the mung.....to drive 2 hours with the price of gas....all those things rolled into one and it just ain't friggin worth it for me. Never did my best fishing from the Race anyway! Enjoy all that extra space on the beach Flap! I miss it but when you boil it all into one pot.....its just not worth it.

Amen to that !!! Caught my last fish of '07 on November 17th. still have a solid 3 months left in RI...

This season has met my expectations so far, although time is tough to come by as is energy.
Lots of quality/quantity trips along with plenty of slow nights mixed in too. Still looking for one real big one to top it off as mid 30# (released) is my best so far.
Usually late Sept/Early Oct. is go time for me. Taking the family to story land for a couple days and will be back at it Thursday night.

This season has been good for me. I've really started to concentrate on using my fly rod. I went out last Friday (I had it off!) and chased birds and bait all over the place. I ended up losing a bunch of fish but landed a few small ones too. Always fun on a Kayak. There is a lot of bait around the NS we should be into fish for a few more months.

You can keep the cape as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone with the wherewithal to overcome all of the above should be rewarded with some fish, even if its a quick blast. The odds are more against consistent fishing success now than ever though.
Closures, birds, and mung have always been factors and they were easy to overcome. Its the lack of fish now that makes it tough to justify the time and expense.

Yes, the outer beaches were the places where legends were made, in my time back it was in the late 70's and early 80's, others it was the 90's but there are a 100 or more other places that have great bass fishing around the hook.
As I have said before, I look at the Cape as not a collection of towns but as one big one, It's an island actually, manmade maybe but is is surrounded on all the axises of the compass by saltwater.
The bay shores, the canal, the outer beaches and the southside shores all have good fishing at one time or another.
I beleive that the only way to really appreciate what there is still to offer is to live here year round and it took many many years to learn all of what it has secreted away.

I know of several casters who had a hell of a morning yesterday with bass up to 25lbs on an outer beach, two that have been making a trek of an hour by foot to be rewarded night after night of fish on needles to 20lbs plus and this has been going on for a month or so now, regardless of moon, weather or tide over pure sand.
The great back beaches have had thier good times and bad times in cycles, yeah there is mung, there's been mung for decades. Yeah the seals suck, but I have seen fish in large schools feeding alongshore while packs of seals swim along just outside.

The birds, well, thats the biggest problem but with the two federal witches now being transfered, things could get a bit better.

I have done better this year on Cape than in the last several years but it's by knowing where and when to go to get the most out of the particular time of the season and what to avoid and changing my one way of thinking to open up areas that before I wouldn't give a second thought too as I was headed for the outer beach.

If you can afford to live here, can afford a relaible 4x4 and a small skiff and don't mind being mobile and have no problem taking a little ride you can catch all the fish you want.

the cape still has it, you just have to know where to look. You can call all your sources to find out whats hot and whats not but if they themselves have thier sights only on one section of this archipelego, they are robbing themselves as well of many opportunities.

Some people say the place has gone to hell because they only fish what they know (take a canal rat to the beach and vice a versa 90% of either type will be lost as to what to do).

Youc annot let that kind of thing happen if you want to catch fish these days, learn all of the disciplines you can, you'll never go fishless.

As I said Flap...the key is to live on the cape. My directive was made to the Race in general in terms of the stickers as you were mentioning. I would live there if I could afford it.

This has been my best year yet, even though I have only been surf fishing 2 1/2 years, with this season being the only real serious one... I have learned a lot in one year, and it makes me excited knowing i have years ahead of me, since im 32 years old. my season started may31 wiith a PB of 43.10 pounder... This past week has been better than last fall... Been out 4 nights, for a total of 7 keepers, and many shorts... only 1 blue. Largest was 24#. 1 keeper last night on a full bright moon was 36" 16 pounds. This past week has been ggreat for me... I hope the fall is great too, but I wont have as much time as i do nowto fish sice I have the summers off, and go back to work next week... Best of luck guys...

the one reason why people think the cape has become hell for fishing other then the canal is because the guys putting in the time out on the cape are guys who keep it just to them selves and only them selves! they are the guys who dont want people to know what fish they are catching or where they are fishing not even the slightest hint. they are humble men who are just in it for the fish. they could care less about competition, or fishing with friends, or posting online on these internet forums...these are the real heros who fish cape cod.

You can keep the outer cape beaches. As for the “other” fishing, you can find fish all over the cape if you have the time, close proximity of residence, and the right equipment, no doubt.
I don't go much beyond the canal bridges anymore because I can catch plenty of quality fish right in the canal and in other areas that are closer to home than the cape.
The allure of traveling the extra distance to Chatham and beyond was the possibility of taking numerous large fish, and perhaps a lifetime fish. That possibility has been diminished in recent years. Will it return is anyone's guess. I've become more proficient in places closer to where I live, so I will likely never return to the outer cape unless it’s for an extended vacation. One nighters to Truro are a thing of the past for me, but I used to do them regularly.

a year that started off really good quickly went bad. no boat for me and shore fishing seemed slow this summer on the north shore. saugus river is still empty. just call me no fish.( and I'm really not much of a fisherman. chunk and sit, chunk and sit.)
