Goose, craigslist is the way you want to go. WHat is the general price range? Are you using it to learn on and play around the house? I've been playing, teaching, selling for over 25 years so let me know if you have questions, glad to help!

Goose, I've got a 30-40 year old Guild 12 string in like new condition - don't know how much you want to spend though and I'm not really sure of the value.
Maybe RIJIMMY will chime in with a ballpark estimate here.

Tony, check out daddys music right next to texas roadhouse. they have quite a few used guitars. They will also take it back in trade if you decide you would like something better in the future. They have always treated me well enough to recommend them to a friend.

Guilds have appreciated a lot and that might be worth some good $ if its in decent shape. Quality names that are in good shape appreciate over time. It really depedns if its a high end Guild or a low end.
For example I have a 1980 Les Paul I bought when I was 15yrs old for $450. Used the crap out of it practicing and in bands for years and now its worth $1500!

Ive played Guitar since I was 12 years old. Like buying a flyrod don't buy anything sight unseen, the neck could be warped, the action to high, cracks at the necks and body.
The best place to buy a guitar regardless of the budget you set is the Guitar Center ( Guitarcenter.com)
They have them all over. I frequent the one in Attleboro on rt 1.
They will let you handle and play anything they have, no question asked. If you go in there go into the back and go into the acoustic room and ask the help. I have been in a number of these stores and Attleboro and Boston on Commonweath Ave across from BU are the best. They have hundreds of guitars of all price ranges and will set it up for you once you purchase it, straightening the neck, setting the action etc, string type you name it.
I love that place and don't shop anywhere else. Before you buy on line without seeing the instrument check them out.
Unless the instrumnet is properly set up and matched for you you won't enjoy it as much as you would one that is.

exactly what Flap said! go to GC and they will take care of you. I got my first guitar at Daddy's and the thing was a piece of crap, the action was wayyyyy to high and it was a bear to learn on, but I didn't know any better.
I also think the best bang for your buck as a beginner is the lower end Yamahas, they play and feel really good for the money

Thanks again. I know a guy who is a very talented guitarist he too recommend Attleboro, I'll have to check these places out...you know,during day light hours  . Quick question is it difficult to tune a guitar, I don't wanna have to take it over there. |

I disagree Flap. I worked at Guitar Center, Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood CA. Guitar Center is the Home Depot of musical instruments. It serves it purpose.
I own 9 guitars, well over 20K in value and I never have bought new. It makes no sense. For what Goose is looking for, thousands buy guitars, they then sit in a case for 5 years because no one plays them and then they sell them. Guitars, if cared for, get better with age. The more they are played, the better then play! Buy used, its the best value.
BTW - you need to tune a guitar everytime you play it. It takes 2 minutes, a good tuner helps, but after awhile you
ll be able to tune one string and then tume the other strings to that note.

BTW - Guitar Center employees work on commission, and NO price is set. You should, never, ever, never.........ever pay the retail price they quote you. Always bargain. If they tell you a pack of strings is $6, ask them, How about 2 packs for $10. If you buy anthing of value like a guitar or amp, bargain on teh rpice and then get free cables, strings, shirt, hat, etc. Always bargain at Guitar Center!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I vote for getting a cheapy first to see if you like it and are going to stay with it. Then get a nice one. I have 2 beautiful Les Pauls and a Strat and they have not seen the light of day in at least a decade. No time, just gave it up after 20years. Tuning a guitar at first seems daunting but before you know it you can use a pitch pipe and be done in a minute. Have fun it is a great hobby. I just pray my daughter will be interested so she can use mine.
