Who has caught a Stiper that was tagged? - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

I have caught thousands of stripers and have never had one with a tag on it, I recently talked to someone that caught 2 this year alone. I was just wondering if tagged Stripers were common. The person that I talked to said they usually get atleast 2-5 a year...I would just like to hear some of your experiences.......... Thanks

I caught one last year, it had a pink tag w/ a phone number and the word 'REWARD', I started to think of what kind of cash prize or boat I'd win (my imagination kicks ass). So I called the number and it was the Maryland Wildlife dept, I gave them the info on the fish, length and location. Then they sent me one of the cheapest looking hats I've ever seen. I did get some good info on the fish though, when it was tagged and what size it was then. (it was tagged two years earlier at 26" and I caught it at 29". I was going to keep it, but it was my third keeper in a row and I was sure they'd keep coming, they didn't, but it was a great day. I love fishing with live mackeral. How many more days ....

I got one last year, pink tag.

It said to cut if off and send it in.

I got a information form to fill in and a certificate and pin.

It was only about a 30" fish.

. Funny all those CT fish I've caught and never a tagged one and you come down and nail em.

Just this year i caught a striper with a tag in it. The tag was a yellow one, from the American Littorial Society based in New Jersey. I kept the tag, threw the fish back, and called the # on the tag once i got home. I was told the fish was tagged on 5-11-02. I caught the fish on 6-15-02....not even a month later, and only a couple hundred yards from where it was tagged!

The ALS sent me a brocure explaning how "I can help with the tagging program." They charge you $6 for a 'tag kit' with 10 tags, a needle, and cards to be sent back....the only catch is that for you to be able to buy the tags, you must be a member, which will set you back $30. I would've signed up for the price of the tags, but for them to have the nerve to try and charge me a $30 fee to have the privilege to help them and their study was too much for me.

I have not got one in a while... I did get one a few years back... I have a buddy who seems to catch tagged fish on what seems like a regular basis.

I got some info and a cheap pin. I think it is a good program, they have learned a lot about the fish via tagging. (growth rates migration ect) It is worth the hassle to report it.

There was a story in the fisherman in the last year or so (I think last winter) about a guy who caught the *same* tagged fish twice, He caught it at the same spot (North rip, BI) in different years. How about those odds? That guy should buy a lotto ticket.

I got one from the ALS too. It was caught in CT a couple years ago, I forget the specs.

Was coming back from Long Point via Flyers, stopped by a clammer boat, the guy from Flyers caught a tagged "schoolie." Was not a "keeper" Guy tried to keep it, got into an argument with him about it, bottom line is that he kept it. I was in his boat, what was I going to do? Was glad I spoke my mind however...

Last year I caught an untagged keeper (around 35"). Brought it home for dinner. After cleaning the fish, I cut open the stomach to see what was doin. Out popped a tag. I sent it in and I got the info back from NJ i think. I can't remeber the exact info, however said the fish was a Striped Bass that measured in at 18"????

Ifish Chatam and MV I have caugth thousands over the years and yet to get a tag ??
RPM that is a story and a half. The 35 must have eaten the 18 Bass.

I used to help with the tagging for PLUM ISLAND SURFCASTERS and we got them through the AMERICAN LITTORAL SOCIETY. I believe the club had the membership and members of the club would purchase tags. It was very interesting to see where some of the fish would go or not go. The club would keep track of the info and send it on to ALS. You need not cut the tag, you can just jot down the # and take some measurements to pass on so the fish can be on it's merry way.

i once tagged a blue marlin in bermuda and it was caught about 3 years later in bimini, bahamas. i thought it was great hearing how much the fish grew and knowing that the fish was ok since i released it.

I caught two long time ago. Think I got a hat for one and $10 for another. I also got 2 certificates for them. I would tag them myself but don't know how to go about it. Last I knew You had to pay for the tags. Didn't sound like a good deal to me ya know?

The 40" I caught this year was the largest of all the tagged stripers I have caught. It was tagged East Hampton NY back in Nov. of 11/15/2000. It was 39.37". I caught it in early August of this year. If you do the math it took that fish quite a long time to get to 40" A year and 9 months to grow roughly a little over a 1/2" figured they would have grown faster then that!

It had pink plastic tag (looked like 1/8" plastic rod) square with a phone number on it.

yes its interresting to get one ,you'll find out a little about there travel. some times they are hard to see coverd with grouth and watch for bellie tags.

Caught a tagged striper a few years ago. Received a hat, certificate and history on the fish. Hardy little puppy as i recall.
