tide watches
so my wife wanted to get me a tide watch for christmas, but once she started researching she couldn't keep it a secret..... to confusing for her.
wanted to know if anyone has one and more importantly if they make them that display moon rise and moon set times. i saw some that display moon phase but not rise/ set time.
the nixon ones look the coolest but only display regular time and tide time. casio has ones with a ton of options but not sure about quality on those.

If you don't already have a smart phone use the money towards getting one. There are apps like navionics that will give you more than just the tide at one area.

iphone. tide app (sea tow is pretty good) and moon app.
if you want a tide watch for the novelty and style, go for it. if you're going for usable/helpful information, go with apps on iphone or similar.

i have a tide freestyle. i'm on my second one now and have had them for about 10 years now total. the only issue is replacing the bands when they break. it's almost cheaper to buy the latest version at that point. i wear mine when i am fishing all the time. they are waterproof. they are popular with surfers too. it has 9 tide presets i can create from predefined tide sites across the world. in other words, i can use the montauk tide it comes with and adjust it for tides at newport for instance. it shows a bar on the side of the current state of the tide (rising/dropping and at approx what phase) on the main time pane. it does not have moon or sun rise/set times. other than that, the apps are nice too.

When I worked at the surf shop, we use to sell a lot of the freestyle tide watches, simple and affordable.
The Nixon ones were popular but more expensive.
Shark use to make a couple really nice ones too.
Check out this link, it's from 2011, then updated in September of this year but should still help.

I have the Timex tide and temp. This is my second one and I love it. About bulletproof and they look good too. First one got run over by my tractor (don't ask).

Off the cuff I would suggest the Timex Expedition Tide
Bonanza 69 (Never heard of them) but they have one for $70
REI 169:
Or the Casio digitals
Interesting Article - The 10 Best Tide Watches for Fishermen
For me, I have a Marathon TSAR that I set the pip to the next high or low tide (tides change from place to place)
Put any of these watches on a NATO strap with some good spring bars if you don't want to lose it. A NATO (or ZULU) strap runs through both springbars so that if one breaks you don't lose the whole watch
They also have a 17" commercial divers strap designed to go around wet/dry suits that you can cut down
Where I get my NATO straps: maratac
What I want to do one of these days is take an ETA GMT movement and change the GMT gearing and make an automatic tide watch - someday
If anyone is interested I have a Luminox on a Commercial Orange dive strap I might let go for $100

I've got the same one and like it a lot, too. Also, it has a water temp feature which I haven't used fishing, but it's pretty accurate in the pool.

just to add, I have the Nixon tide watch and a G-Shock gulfman. I like both watches and wear them regularly, just do not find much use for them while fishing and tend to go with my dive style watch when fishing. I usually double check tide and moon rise/set times on my phone (more accurate and more information) before heading out. once i'm out, i can base everything on time in relationship to those.

I have a Timex Expedition that I always wear fishing and to the beach. Great, tough, nice looking watch, but I honestly never look at the tide phase on there. I would assume you would know the phase of a tide based on where you choose to go fishing, right? I think the tide phase is a bit of a waste, but that is just me. Again, it is a nice watch though. Like others said, use aps if you have a smartphone.

I have a timex ironman watch on the strap on my commando removable front pouch, its waterproof and was 20 bucks, 3 seaons, 300 plus trips, its still fine.
I like having it there for reference, if i get into a good bite, ill make it a point to check the time for my logs, and reference it to what stage of the tide it is.
This year i started checking it after every fish and kept better mental notes of the start/end of the bite.
Like everyone stated, i use my iphone, check tides before hand and when i head out.
let us know what you end up with

I have a blue Ti Luminox Divers watch that I wear every day. It is my second one. I love it. Rugged and dependable. Awesome view at night. It is almost too bright. When I am bass fishing I actually keep it covered. For 100 bucks it is a good deal.
I always use a velcro band..quick and easy and inexpensive. I only take it off when I wear a suit because it is a little bulky for my dress shirt.
FOR TIDES....I have 3 analog tide clocks on the wall in my kitchen right above a framed chart of my nearby waters. I can sit at dinner and look up and think about where I want to go while every one else is gabbing about some other land-based nonsense.

Last week I lost a Casio that I had for years. Yesterday I ordered an Origo Guide Pro Fishing watch. It has tide information and a compass. Hopefully it works out.
