Kaua'i Charters

Anyone been on a charter in Kauai? I'm heading there with my wife in a few weeks and we would like to do some fishing.

I was there a few years back. The island is more than beautiful. I also went to Maui for 10 days and there is no comparison. I chartered a boat but can't remember the name. I will do some digging around. I'll look for some pic's also. That is the only place I went and didn't want to come back.

Me too , any of the islands are ok by me. I was born on Oahu but left at 3 years old. To think I could have lived there. Always ask my mother what the hell were you thinking. Been lucky to have been back a few times.

I was there 8 years ago and went with a guy that suuuucked! I tried looking him up on-line, but can't find him. Can't remember his name, either. He yelled at me the whole time.
Hope you have better luck than me...evil captain, evil ex-wife...scenery's nice though!

When you look at boats be careful, some of them just bottom fish on the reef, as opposed to big game fishing. Shore fishing is pretty good, think about bring along some light spinning gear to fish off the shore and bring lots of terminal tackle, the lava and coral eats lures.

thanks for the tips! we are spending 8 nights there, 4 on the south side, 3 on the north shore and 1 on the east. I also have 4 days in Honolulu. Can't wait.

Here is my suggestion to you. If you have the time take the ferry to Maui and then the other ferry to Molokai (not sure if there is a direct from Kauai to Molokai. There is a captain that is seriously one of the nicest, most pleasant human beings on this planet. His name is Captain Clay Ching. Here is his website http://www.hallelujahhoufishing.com/

If you are serious about doing it, you can call him and ask him to take you top water plugging for some HUGE GT's!!! He caught a 120lb GT on a popper while recording for a Hawaiian fishing television show. He doesn't advertise it because he feels that the average person is not a skilled enough angler to fish for GT's. But he will take you if you request it.

The day I went, there were huge swells because of the hurricane that was approaching the big island (we were taking 12ft waves on the ferry while sailing back to Maui...people were throwing up and crying. I thought I was Alaskan crab fishing). The conditions weren't great for plugging (constant rollers on and around the reef where the GT's hang out) as it was hard to keep balance but I did hook 2 fish and got one to the boat that was approx 50lbs. before it became unbuttoned. What a fight, what awesome fish, and what a great captain. My wife was with me also and she wasn't feeling too well due to a feminine issue. To try to make her feel better and cheer her up Capt Clay took us to go find some giant sea turtles because my wife loves them. We found some big ole turtles that put a big smile on my wifes face. I would recommend this guy to anyone, unfortunately he lives on Molokai, but if you wanted a once in a lifetime fishing experiance I would recommend Capt. Clay.

Was stationed in Pearl Harbor for 4 years, I would recommend going out on one of the nightime shark fishing trips for tiger shark... lots of fun,, caught a 6 1/2 foot long gray shark the last time I went out. Best friend caught a tiger shark close to 8 feet long. They put up one heck of a fight. I also went on several trips for Mahi-mahi out of Honolulu area. Basically, the more expensive boats usually do better as they either have several boats in their fleet (one finds a school,, the others run to it) or they pay some of the cheaper boats to tip them off when they find schools. Seems like on the cheaper boats you end on your own.. Hawaii offers a lot of great fishing! Good luck and have fun!!!

Make sure you take lots of pics and digital movies so you can drag them out on nites like this. I am going to do so tonite with the family and enjoy a nice walk thru a lush tropical botanical garden in Hilo. Thanks for the reminder on how much I miss the place. Like he said you may, heck will, not want to come back. Just the smell of the place is intoxicating. I met a little old lady in Hilo that I buy flowers from for the wife, and me, from every anniversary and valentines day. Going on 12 years now. The big island has some awesome fishing but you will not be going there I think, so no need to tell you. The funny part is I talked to a charter guy and he told me they start trolling before they get past the breakwater. He said the water is like a few thousand feet deep less than a quarter mile off shore. Then again Mauna Loa is the highest mountain in the world if measured from the sea floor so the water is very deep. Please share some pics when you get back.

My last charter off Kona I asked the Cap why no fishfinder, " don't need one if we throw a rock over the side it would take a half hour to hit bottom." When you are in Kauai on the north side, check out Ke'e beach, last beach on the road. There is an amazing trail in on the left. It drops you in on the most beautiful beach with a little fresh water stream coming of the peaks. 2 or 3 miles tops.

Coming out of Honakahu harbor on the Kona coast the water is 1,000 fathom right at the harbor bouy. I caught a 500 pound blue marlin right there on one trip.
