I was out west a couple years ago fishing for stripers in the Sacramento Delta. There was a tackle shop I was in and the guy was tying grass shrimp flies to use for stripers. Some of the most popular baits for chunking over there are grass and ghost shrimp. Don't see too much of that around here.

Nice thing is that you might just hook a sturgeon too. 'Course you probably wouldn't fair any better landing a sturgeon on a pool stick than you would on a flyrod, still get stripped if you're on shore...

I'd love to catch one of those anyway I could, fly, big stick, hands except that they would slice you right up!!!

I shipped my rods out two years ago when I was setting up an office in Sacramento. I had a sturgeon on from shore for about 5 minutes maybe. Wasn't fighting all that hard then BANG!!! GONE!!! I was fishing a 1209Sabre and a Calcutta 400 - bye-bye... Almost all of those fish of any size are caught from boat, much like tarpon fishing I guess. BTW - the fish hit shrimp. I wound out that trip with two measily stripers but it was fun

Clammer, being a m#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& from north of the east end of the ditch, ie Bastin, I would say "No, I'm not familiar much with them". But I will say that after several trips in Cali using them for bait, shrimps are not something I'd overlook these days.

But I'll tell you one thing, if I ever get back there to Cali fishing for stripers, I'm bringing eels... :P

John grass shrimp are very abundant in the rivers on the Cape and further south. Stripers love them and when the first schoolies hit the rivers that is one thing they chow on. We used to net them and chubs for fresh water bait but lots of times you could see the bass busting them like a mini blitz!
