Aesthetics and Fishing Equipment

Make any difference to you what your gear looks like or what you wear? I wonder because I have always tried to match custom rods with reels that would look good and I do just the opposite when I ski race: I wear every color possible and nothing matches at all. Its so easy too to buy a "sexy" looking plug compared to one that will catch fish just as much but does not have that look to it... interested in what people think as far as aesthetics and the gear that they use and buy...

Ive had a couple rods built to match the reel i was going to be using. But it doesnt matter, i change reels. thats the only thing i have ever coordinated. If i can find a wonderbread surf top it would be a whole other story.

Everything is better on the rocks.

Ask me and Mikey about what we used to wear while racing...late 80's and day-glo colors were not good to anybody!!!
Then again, my VS's are pretty sexy! I never really think what looks good while fishing, though!

I'm proud to say, the plugs I carry are SO UGLY not one person I know would look inside my bag and say "Nice plug...I want one".
Other than that, nothing I wear, own, or use matches color.

In fact, I own 2-3 nice surf bags, but too often, I grab the one I made from a canvas bag I bought at a flea market for $1.00. and use gutter peices all taped together to hold the plugs.

That's not to say I don't own and use quality gear though.

I purchase and use quality gear. And I then to shop for "Made In USA" as much as possible. I personally think that quality gear should look good. Why pay good money for ugly looking gear? That said, I would not go out of my way to match the color of my waders to my surf top, for example.

My $0.02.

Most of my reels are scratched to hell and back, and my favorite rods have wraps that get clouded in wet weather.

I don't fish for show. When you like to fish at night and alone, why should what your gear looks like matter?

This year I will post a picture of you in your wet suit. Then we'll see how good you think you look as opposed to what you really look like.

Why even try.........

The prettiest gear or clothing in the world isn't going to make me look good. I take function, reliability and comfort over style any day.

By the way, you should try this over in the political forum. Mr. Blackwell (Spence) would have a field day with this question. I don't think he comes over to the fishing forum anymore.

Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about empowering people to catch up, to give them tools at their disposal that make it possible for them to access all the hope, all the promise, all the opportunity that America offers. - Marco Rubio

Only Spence cares what he looks like. He once berated me because my plug bag was held together with duck tape. What the Hell? The bag was black. The duck tape was black. No problems.

No boat, back in the suds.

A track coach once told me" Steve, even if you feel bad, look good." In fishing, I try to look good but I would much rather have gear that is functional and last long which is why I like VS's and Lamiglas and the like. As far as matching equipment, I really don't worry too much about it, as long as it works! I will say that I do take excellent care of my stuff which takes about 5 extra minutes after each trip but offers alot in longevity.
