Dunkin Donuts

Thought you guys would like to know that I heard from a friend who's daughter works at one. The corporate offices are telling the stores no more tip cups. The C.O. feels that people are being pressured into tipping, and with the economy the way it is they are worried about a loss of business because of it.

I could never see that a tip was earned for handing a coffee and out the window to me without a napkin.

I do tip well in real restaurants.

I'm ot sure but i thought they got minimum wage , not waitress wages (lower than min because of the tips supposedly making up the difference.) at fast food places ?

Anyway , I now make a cup of coffee each morning at home and eat a big fat BJ's bagel. Cost 65 cents instead of $4-$5 at DD.

If she's being told that, it's not coming from corporate. Corporate is making all franchisees have employees report tips to the IRS. Some franchisees are doing away with the tip cups because the the tip reporting is a PITA. Dunkin Brands is not pressuring anyone to do away with the tip cups.

Funny you mention this just a day after i was just asking my hubby if he has noticed this happening more often.....(and yes I have noticed this sporadically in the past too)

The last couple weeks I have had this happen about 4 times in the drive through. I order coffee, pull up to window, hand a bill over (such as a $5 or 10 dollar bill) and receive the BILL part of my change then my coffee and am left waiting an uncomfortable amount of time for the COIN part of my change.

sorry but if I am buying a coffee for $2.09 you are not to assume that I should leave you the 91cents....if I choose to then fine but it seems like they are doing this for the mere hope you will drive off without it.

Yes they do that. I wait or say where's my change. I think if it happened often I would ask to speak to the manager. That's called stealing in my book.

Of course half of them can't make change for a dollar anyway!

I bought a thermos at Xmart for about $15 and it holds 3 good sized cups of coffee, and keeps it hot.
I bring it everywhere. Making your own is the way to go.

I don't understand the tip cup for something that's handed over the counter to you. My daughter works making subs. Customer asks for a #10 off the list. First girl cuts the roll and tops it with meat and cheese, second girl O&V and mayo, third girl, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, wraps it and hands it over. I see that as the job and not tip worthy, but she makes about $10-15 per week in tips. I guess it's spare change. There's a dozen or so small tables and they will deliver orders to the table. I asked her how many people that get served ever leave a tip? None. It just doesn't make sense.

I've had the "keep the change" thing happen to me. They apologized. The guy at the local packie kept the pennies once for the leave one, take one bowl. He was corrected.

FYI for you all

Todays update on the subject!

I went inside today and what sits on the counter but a nice sign stating "effective immediately we have a no tipping policy" where the tip cup used to sit! no kidding!~

Dunkin Donuts used to have it stated on their menu signs NO TIPPING ALLOWED. This was back in the 70s though when they used ceramic mugs and would refill them as you sat at the counter.

Some of the local Dunks around here have replaced the tip cups with collection boxes for Childrens Hospital. I usually drop the coins in the box as it is going to a good cause.

I don't care about pennies but when the assume the quarter or 40 cents is theirs then I get pissed. As long as I put it in the charity box , its OK. If they do it without asking , that's a problem.

I don't know if any of you work in town but I've seen the same (proffesional bums with a cup) in front of the same DD for years . I'm talking over 20 yrs. They were near the entrance ,, now at some DD's they are opening the door for you ,,yakking at you ,, sarcastic "Have a nice day" when you stiff them on the way out .. I'd rather leave the change with the girl who's working at 5 am than them ..

I hate the freeloaders on the sidewalks etc. I always ask inside why they allow the loiterers.
