Yeah, like there isn't another spot between Nobska Light and Stage Harbor where you can catch a bluefish in May and June.
I don't know how old you are--but you should realize that magazines have been doing this since Frank Woolner was the editor of Salt Water Sportsman.
Red Top gives away free maps to my fishing spots every spring, by the way. Along with a free tide chart.

those magazines have burned lots of spots i fish, so what i go there in the middle of the night and no one is around. the only thing they really do is draw people to those spots during the day and most don't know what they are doing. when there are people there at night however, i know they have done their homework and they know what there doing, and did not just go there because they read some article. what do you have to say when they give away other spots that aren't yours, o sweet now i have this new place in RI to fish. the magazines are there to help and guide you to becoming a better fisherman, i am sure it is not their intention to piss people off, but then again what do i know.

ya thats a good point of course. just another example of "not in my backyard" .... but like you said too, most of these people u will never see at 11pm or 3-5am when the fishing is probably at its best. i would not be too worried

It's OK to burn spots...just not MY Spots
Right here on this very site it happened last week regarding a spot on the BB side of the Cape. But the person asking the question was a regular here, obviously worthy of asking the question, not some unwashed stupid "googan" so it's OK.

If the spots (one inparticular) can fit 3-4 cars and it's not that straighforward to find, the majority of people will move on to somethng easier to access. The ones that make it past getting to the locations will bail if they don't catch immediately is my guess. The ones that fish when its convenient for them as opposed to the best time to fish, will call it quits too after a trip or two.
Early season feeding frenzy on shore that will subside when some have to walk >0.5m to a spot, it's cold out, it's drizzly, and they can't cast a chunk of bait within range of breaking fish. The article did not show any location that was not publicly known. If you have your Barnstable resident parking sticker, your way ahead of the game for the remainder of the season.

Hmmm.... then maybe you should also not subscribe to any newspapers with outdoor columms, give up frequenting local tackle shops and TV as well.
In the early 90's it would be nothing to see over a 100 guys casting ( mostly poorly at that) at SCB for blues in May. Talk about a spot that everyone knows about.
Lastly, there are no secret personal spots anymore and to get your panties in a bunch because of an article on of all things South Cape beach and bluefish is just a real waste of time.
This spot burning thing is such bull$hit, there are no secret spots.

Usually people don't have a problem burnig OK spots, rarely will you see people burning their own favorite spots.
Spots is a no-win situation, but it is sexy to talk spots and make coin.
Fact is, 99% of us have gotten tipped off to try a spot from a mag, or book, or a site.

Every year, as the first of the migrants hit the shores, the "spot burning" discussions begin, just because "X" amount of people fish the "spot" doesnt mean they will catch well there, it's not just the spot, it's knowing how to fish it, and very, very few articles I have seen about "spots" REALY explain how to fish them correctly, do I like company when I fish... hell no, and most nights, I'll go somewhere else, it's a big coast line, and somewhere, I will find fish and be alone, once I find "my" fish , mum is the word... when two people know a secret, it's no longer a secret any longer....
and as far as posted reports go...most times they are not worth the paper they are printed on, they are a day late and a dollar short.. the ones REALLY in the know... arn't talking...
on that note, it's almost time for me to dissapear for the summer..hope everyone has a good season.

It's definitely a losing battle. However, don't let anyone passify you that it's OK...it's NOT OK. It will continue to happen... True, there are no secret spots...but it doesn't make it right to post or print about not-so-common spots so that Tom, #^^^^& and Harry who don't really fish but want to go stick a rod somewhere with a campfire, loud radio and a keg to ruin it for the guys who quietly get in and out without a trace.

That's more of a mouthful than you know. Yes, they draw people to these spots during the day...so yes, they're in plain view of the local residents..."most don't know what they are doing"....which to me equates to less educated in the etiquette of fishing, trash, improper parking, loud and obnoxious,etc?etc/....all things that will piss off residents who are the main reason why we lose access to our shorelines. A LOT of these magazines AND websites that give out spot information are looking for 2 things .... $$$$ AND RECOGNITION...which normally leads to $$$$....a LOT of these z-heroes who post about spots, or write articles about spots fall into the same category. I believe this to be true...as well as BS. It sux...we have to learn to live with it. EVERYONE has read about a spot that someone wrote about and tried it. We ARE ALL GUILTY. If you don't think you are.....you're lie-ing to yourself.
O=K....I'm done for now. ...time to regroup

Just think of it this way, all day long there will be all these people not catching and chumming the spot for your stealthy after dark arrival.

A few comments:
1 - It's not your spot. No offense, but it's not.
2 - In this political climate, the more responsible outdoorsmen participating, the better. If some dingbat catches his first 10 lb fish and becomes and avid, outspoken defender of all things fishermen, all the better. We need more fishermen, hunters, shooters, etc., not less.
3 - People have short memories, so fish somewhere else for a few weeks, and all will be well again. Plus it's April.
4 - Your point is not lost on me. There are places where you have to trespass to fish and guys talk about going there, during the season, like it's Disneyland. Talk about a sensitive spot, but since it's "cool" to fish there and you can't get there by car, it's fair game? There have been articles written about it on this site. I have a picture from last year where one spot at that place was legitimately crowded. Sometimes a little discression is warranted.

one of my biggest pet peeves. i was lucky that a few of the old timers took a liking to me and showed me around. then i was taught the correct way to fish that spot.
now in the instant information age, i cannot think of a spot that i haven't seen in print. the only thing missing in most of the srticles was the way to fish that spot. when that happens, i'll take up golf.

There are books in print that offer the top however many striper fishing locations from NJ to ME. These books have been around for years and they provide the reader with directions, when to go, how to fish the spots and what to use for bait/lures. The only thing they don't do is cast for you.
I've seen spots that I fish in books and when I go, there are never crowds and there are usually plenty of fish. Don't get too worked up if you see some guy in bermuda shorts with a meatstick and a 5 gallon bucket in one of "your" spots. Those guys usually go once, realize the popular spot stinks and put their gear away for the season. It's not worth getting worked up over.
As for the spot "burned" in the mag, there's plenty of miles of productive shoreline to fish there. I've never had a problem finding a place away from everyone else when I've gone. And that place has been burned more often and in more places than you can count.

Could it be reasonably stated that On The Water caters to serious outdoorsmen? Saying that, do you think they have a large number of suedo fishermen pick up the mag?
I believe On The Water is basicly preaching to the choir and the impact that they have with articles like this is minimal.

You know what you need to do, walk a little bit more. Most googans won't walk any further from the car to the waters edge. Go down the beach a little further, That brings great joy.

I think the bottom line is that most spots are not that secret and even if a spot is "shut down" during the day, 90% of the time you can go back in the deep night without any problems (most of my favorite spots are like this actually). For example, at a UDL, a grumpy homeowner likes to yell at you, but when you go back when he's a asleep, no problem!
Like Mike said, magazines have been doing this as long as poeple have been fishing. If you are that concerned, you are better off going to a boat or kayak. In fact, the pioneers of kayak fishing up around my parts are almost all surfcasters that got fed up with the trash and the craziness that ensues at a lot of spots. You can buy a nice kayak for the price of a van stall, so its not like its that out of reach.

When someone says "spot burning".....
I say "curiosity slowdown"...
Its that simple. If you read about a spot either in print or on line, you can safely assume a 3-5 day waiting period, then things will simmer down and get back to normal. People need to be re-educated as to what spot burning is....the end of the world it ain't.

I don't know what spot Mr. Moosh was referring to, I have received my latest copies but haven't thumbed through them yet...
In my opinion,,,and for obvious reasons, any public beach/state park or any general public access area...is wide open to discussion, print, post, seminar //etc//etc
I'm referring to a spot for example...that's on a Dead End street....a spot that may or may not require a parking permit, a spot that has very minimal parking. Even if you can park legally, residents can still find ways to take your access away. When the wrong people hear about spots like this, it's the beginning of the end. Sooner or later there's a keg party or a campfire...without trash barrels, where does the trash go?? What about the remains from the campfire?? ...1 out of every 5 take their trash with them?? Do they really? It's easy to proclaim that on here...but at 3am, when it's dark and there's nobody around,,, do you really chase down that Power Bar wrapper that the wind just blew away in the dead of the night??..I've seen SO MANY spots taken away....it is VERY very depressing. That's why these discussions sometimes set me off....I still consider myself a youngen, but I've been fishing for a LONG time...and when I think back to places I used to be able to fish with my dad but can no longer access, again it's very depressing.
...and for you guys who primarily BOAT fish, your words mean nothing to me as you have gained 95% of those spots back,,,..so quit telling us landlubbers to go find another spot, OK?
|

there was also a huge article on Plum Island with spots all listed, but that is the biggest burned spot anyway, so it doesn't matter!

Exactly!! People getting upset about fishing spots is ridiculous!! There is no such thing as a secret spot. Any local tackle store would give up that spot to a paying customer. Give me a break!!
