Washburn Island Access - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Hi, I'm new to this site and here's my first question.

In May my son's Boy Scout Troop is doing a canoe trip to Washburn Island for weekend camping. My wife very graciously volunteered my boat to transport supplies over to the island. (not even sure if I'll have it ready to go by then) and need to know where i can put in my boat. Its a 17' BW Montauk. I'll also need to park the truck and trailer somewhere from Friday morning till Sunday afternoon. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm not familiar with these waters at all. I live in Marshfield and boat mainly the north and south rivers and duxbury to minot light. thanks, mike

Mike that is on Waquoit Bay. There is free ramp, with free parking right before the boat yard. Bring a tube wih you, the water is shallow and there the tubing is great there, don't forget some lite tackle rods too.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all our campers:
Access to the Washburn Island Campground is by boat only.
Camping on Washburn Island is a primitive camping experience.
There is no water ,showers and telephones on the island. Please bring adequate potable water to provide each member in your party with a gallon of water per day.
No open fires are allowed on the island. Please bring a portable stove using man-made fuels or a charcoal grill.
Please carry out everything you carried in.
Ticks are present on Washburn Island, please check yourself throughly.
There are two nearby launch sites available, however parking is only available at White's Landing (see directions below).
Getting There:
Waquoit Bay Nat. Estuarine Res
149 WAQUOIT HIGHWAY
Waquoit MA 02536

From Boston: Follow Rte. 3 South to Sagamore Bridge/Cape Cod Canal. Follow Route 6 East over the bridge to Exit 2 and the intersection with Route 130. Follow Route 130 South to Great Neck Road in Mashpee. Just after the Flume restaurant, bear right to the Mashpee Rotary. Halfway around the rotary take Route 28 North. Take a left on a small road immediately after Edwards Boat Yard (4 miles from the Mashpee Rotary). Parking is only available in a large town administered parking area adjacent to the intersection of Route 28.From Providence/West: Follow Route 495 or Route 195 to Route 25. Route 25 crosses over the Bourne Bridge and becomes Route 28. Follow Route 28 South to Route 151. Follow Route 151 to the Mashpee rotary. Halfway around the rotary take Route 28 North. Take a left on a small road immediately after Edwards Boat Yard (4 miles from the Mashpee Rotary). Parking is only available in a large town administered parking area adjacent to the intersection of Route 28.

thank you for the information. The Boy Scouts have camped there a few years back and i get the task of transporting over all their supplies, ie water, tents, packs, food etc. So the information you provided is very helpful. Seems like its pretty straight forward in terms of the directions etc. take care, mike

Thanks, that would be great. I have camped at Washburn before but it was with a bunch of adults.

Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back with you. We're from Marshfield, off of rte. 3. One thing i'm trying to figure out is where i keep my boat after ferrying the supplies to the camp ground for the scouts. I don't have a skiff so I can't anchor and paddle into shore. I have a 17' whaler.

I grew up on Waquoit Bay, there is only about a 2-3 foot tide there. With a 17 Whaler you will have no problem near the camp grounds. if It's low tide put the boat ride up on the beach and throw the anchor on shore. If it's high tide just anchor a little ways out and walk in. Much different tides that Marshfield.

thank you for the info. Yea we have about 9.5 foot tide here and the water is a little cold for swimming in from the boat. Seems like this trip is getting easier and easier with all the information everyone is providing me. thanks much,

I'm back from the trip to Washburn Island. Everything was great there with the exception of the rain on Friday night and Saturday. Sunday was windy. We will go back this summer if we can secure reservations. It's easy to get there, the island is great, super place to hang for a few days with the family. Well worth the time and trouble.

How'd the fishing go? I saw all the canoes you guys brought over. Was your CC the one up on the beach with the low tide Saturday AM in front of the campground?

Hi, didn't get to try any fishing or make it over to MV for breakfast like I hoped. Yes, my CC was the one on the beach Saturday morning. I didn't set a stern anchor as the wind was coming from the west/sw most of friday and the weather predicted the same and the bow was facing the wind. Of course it shifted over night and blew my boat up on the beach. I got it back out on Saturday's high tide around 1PM. But of course is was fog all day and rain off and on so the fishing was out. It was a nice time and the kids had fun which is what counts. I can fish anytime. Mainly i wanted to help with getting all the gear over and back.
