I can't recall the name of a whatchamacallit.

A drill bit that has a non-fluted tip that is thinner diameter then the cutting part of the drill? Like a through hole following tip and tail weight size cutting part. Not a step drill but similar.

And who might carry those?

I think you could do it with a bit that is used to drill pocket holes if you replaced the pilot with a solid piece, woodworkers warehouse etc

I think this is what I am looking for if I replace the pilot bit with an 1/8" smooth steel rod. Note the set screw in the picture. And the flat one is on sale!!!

I am looking to follow the through hole when I am drilling the tail weight hole. The other step drills I have seen are one piece but this one looks like it will do the trick.

That looks like what I used to drill out spot welds when I was doing autobody work.
Check the countersink drill bits out at Lowes or Home depot; they secure the cutter to the drill bit (allen set screw) and you could put a rod in place of the drill bit.

those look like they are made to drill pocket holes for screws. Like a Kreg type pocket hole drilling machine type thing(although the Kreg system uses a step bit)

I used to use one in a shop for assembling face frames, now I use something a bit different.

I bet you could find them as replacement bits for the boring machine that is meant to drill the pocket holes, there are many varieties, makes and models.

I see you found it and the one you need is on sale, nevermind.

if you know a machinist he can whip them up pretty easy. All you need is a grinder. I have been doing mine like that since I started but I made mine in several sizes and the pilot part has no flutes just a ground 5/32 dia. which follows my thru hole. Works great and i sometimes only use a hand drill. I can't imagine doing it any other way. Pretty sure Mike has them made for the belly hole and the counter bore ground onto them for grommet seating, same idea would be used for tail weight. If you ground down the drill to 5/32 pilot there would not be any flutes left so it would just be a dia.

Alas - I don't have that kind of machinist contact around here. Since the pilot part of the one I pictured is removable I'm just going to flip the bit 180 to get the smooth thing. I've been doing my through holes in 1/8 so it should work for me.

you may find that your hole will quickly fill with chips as that type of thing is meant to drill on an angle and in that case the chips fly out freely. So go a little at a time, you'll see.

yes they tend to load up quickly,especially the 4 fluted ones. We have lots of counter bores at work and you can interchange the pilots for them with the set screw set up, which makes them versatile.

like these. Lots of sizes and may be cheaper, may not. You'll have to look thru the catalog to find the size you need. If they offer 3 fluted ones i'd opt for those.

I think you may be talking about these bits. I have one for the belly gromets and another for my tail weights. Got them from a member on this site under the handle splshnplug. They make my life a little easier and for the money they can't be beat .
