Truck Question

I have a 97 ford exped eddie bower with 173k on it. i ahve had all the ball joints done, inner and outter tie rods on both sides, wheel bearings, breaks and routers.

I am having a problem of serious shaking when high speed breaking, its not like your typical warped router shake, the whole truck shakes, or it pulsates, now it doesnt do this all the time. the other thing that happens is when i come to a stop light it has a train taking off chug effect.

Anyone have any ideas?

even the steering wheel ? almost feels like the body is coming off the frame.

I am convinced that it can be thought thanks for the forethought, something i have been putting off for a little was a tranny service.

Mine did that until I cleaned and lubed the caliper slides. And make sure that the brake pads or rotors didn;t get grease on them.

That and check your wheel bearings inner and outer.

the wheel bearing are on the list up top, they are done that was actualy the first thing i did.

Had similar problems with my 96 F150. A new steerig box finally did the trick.
Check with Karl F. he's got a 97 F150 and knows his stuff, he
sure helped me.

that was my first thought over all, i asked a friend of mine whos a ford guys and who does most of my work with me on my truck and he said no, but that is something i have thought, what other signs might there be if its a bad steering box?

I assume who ever did the work did an alignment after replacing steering parts.
Steering box play can be checked by just turning the wheel back & forth and watching the movement of the pitman arm.
Check the drag link on the left side, typical of a ford.

yup alignment was done at firestone i got the life time alignment. - good suggestion about checking the Steering box was just pondering how to check that. both drag links were destroyed about 4 months ago they were replaced as well.

Is this still happening? If it only shakes when braking I would check calipers and brake hoses. Drive it, get it hot then jack up wheels one at a time (unless u have a lift) spin wheels see if ones dragging. Also a new rotor can be nfg, cheapest isn't always best. Then drive it to your local scrap yard, its a ford, leave it there!!!!

Floating feeling on the steering wheel. You can have them try a steering box adjustment if it's not rusted tight. In my case it was and i had to replace it.

bingo...
start with this.. if that ain't it..remember you are driving a ford..
famous for chittay calibers... replace mine at least once every 12-18 months..none of the aftermarket chit seems to last... and fords are famous for haning up, and or freezing, or only working on one side...
double check them rotors, they may have super heated and warped..
or, like mine, looked great on the outside, but, the inside was crapola..

how soon does the chug chugin go away after take off?..
and the "shake of death" only occurs during hard braking?
how about normal slow stops?
if your guy is a true ford guy, he should figure this out fairly quickly...
they do have their issues...

I had to do a pitman arm on mine..after doing the ball joints and tie rod ends, steering box is still tight, amazingly.. I have a 98 f150, with a failry hard 145K on it.. lot of beach abuse, and dirt road use.. same platform as the expedition, and my wife had a 97 expedition for a decade.... JPI's got the last of the "good guy" trucks with his 96, whole different front end, than what they went to in 97...

but anyways... start with BBJ's diagnosis....

if that does not help....make sure your front axle is completely disengaged... freind of mine with a 97 had something similar, and the little vacuam unit up front was leaving the front axle engaged, and was causing simialar symptoms....

how are you tires? Mine did the same thing only when breaking at high speed and it was the tires, they were scalloped pretty bad.

Thanks Karl, i think i will start with the calipers its all types of breaking but if i lay into it its not as bad as soft breaking.

tires are less then 6 months old and are Continentals.
