Slow internet application

Did some cleanup and tuneup, and added some RAM to speed up the old computer a bit. Seems to have done the trick for most things. The internet use/application (FireFox) is still very slow. When I check the system performance I see the CPU is maxed out by FireFox. Any thoughts on how to remedy the situation? I am thinking of moving to Chrome for internet use. Other than that it would probably be a new machine.

Go to Chrome! I dumped FF over 10 months ago (constant messages FF crashed) and IE (hang ups) over 6 months ago.

FF 3.5 or FF 4?

Export your bookmarks / saved info / mark down apps& adons used, Uninstall FF, reboot, reinstall latest full version. Then see what happens.

FireFox is poor at releasing memory so if you are a tab junkie like me and have 3-4 FF windows with 5-15 tabs each, you need to close and reload in order to release all the memory from Firefox. Just closing tabs will not release much memory. One bad site in the tabs will leak memory / crush CPU time. Unlike IE 8 and prior (haven't used 9 due to compatibility issues), FF will not release pool memory by browser, IE opens specific instance of mem/CPU by window so it tolerates open and closing enough.

Once my FF usage goes beyond 370-430MB or memory in use, it slows real quick and will often enough lock up.

Have not used FF4 on my main rig yet but will start soon.

I like Chrome but use mostly IE and FF because that is whet my clients use most.

Thanks for the help. FF is using close to 2G, but it has not yet hung up except for one page with pics on my Volvo how-to forum. Looks like the best bet is move over to Chrome. Thanks again.

I like Chrome, it's just not compatable with everything like IE is. The newest version of IE is a lot like Chrome, check it out. I run both.

FF 4 has been the cat's behind for me both in Linux and Windows7.
Can't say the same about Chrome or Google Chrome, its been nothing but a horror show.

A lot of people like Opera 10 as it is very speedy.IE9 is ok but it seems MS is always playing catch-up when it comes to web browsing.
