Butterfly Jigging the Ditch
Anybody try butterfly jigs in the canal? They work off Chatham and Monomoy...Not sure if I want $15+ jigs bouncing the rocky bottom, I guess it's no different than losing a $15 plug to a blue or a bad knott...

Yup, they are fished in the ditch and are very effective.

In the Deep Force jig series I have a 5 oz and a 3 oz. rigged with assist hooks. The 3 oz also comes with a bucktail. These will be a$$ kickers in the canal this spring!

I lose 1-2 jigs every time I fish the canal. I very rarely ever lose a plug. I'm definitely not putting $15 jigs in the ditch.

Crippled herring for half or third of the cost is pretty darn effective. Not sure if the butterfly jig is enough of an improvement to justify the cost considering how often they will be donated.

No, no, no. we’re 30… 30, three zero.

Lost a couple of crippled herring last year due to sheer stupidity. Scared what would happen if I were to throw even more expensive jigs in there

Like stated above, the crippled herring can be really effective fished deep and at less than half the cost. Also, I'd think you'd be crazy to throw a butterfly jig with those assist hooks on them - just something else swinging around to get wedged into something on the bottom.
Joe, that 3oz jig looks interesting. If I buy one and it isn't actually an a$$ kicker at the canal this spring, can I get a refund?

You'll lose about 20 times more lures to the bottom, than to bluefish and bad knots. And if you fish there regularly, you can up that to 100 times more.
I use the cheap Sea Striker knockoffs of the old Megabait tins for my Canal metal.

Ya.....I do not think they out do a crippled herring by much.....Not enough to justify the big difference in cost anyway........

Glad the kid found a mold that looks like a 4 oz. MegaBait. A little hard to pour but it's worth it. O.........and they work.

Those work just fine. No need for the expensive Shimanos.
