Flies everywhere !
Flies everywhere !
They are everywhere !
Doing bass charters in Boston harbor the past 3 weeks they are all over my boat, and biting !
Offshore trips to Stellwagen, same story , though yesterday they seemed more like house flies than horse flies.
I know my boat could use a good cleaning but every boat out I ask the same story.
Anyone know why ?
And more important anyone know how to get rid of them.
Some kind of bug spray or bomb ?
Gonna ask a friend who does exterminating.

I was at Stellwagon also and had a terrible time with the bitting flies also. Where did they come from so far offshore?

We were shark fishing about 12-14 miles off Newport sunday a.m. The flies were brutal. Biting me everywhere. I got to be a serious issue after a couple hours.

I noticed them two weeks ago on Jeffreys and Middle bank. Looked just like houseflies, but bit. Showed up around 10 every morning. Vicious little things... Only thing that would take care of them was lots of flypaper.
I was told they're called chum flies.

I'm about a 1/4 mile from the river and have an uncontrollable fly problem. Didn't know if it had anything to do with the water. Put out fly paper and it has 40 flies in 30 min. What else would draw these suckers in? I actually searched for a dead animal under the deck or something like that....nothing. Puzzled!!

When the early AM storm came through, I put my foul weather pants on. Realized I was not getting them biting my legs and ankles when the storm passed, so left them on. Was happier being a little warm than getting bitten... Lots of talk about them on the radio....

So no one got a cure ?
Got an offshore tuna & ground fish trip sat with guys that been out with me last 5 years.
Great guys but the kind of group that brings bottles of hand sanitizers and their own towels for when they touch a fish.
The flies should really go over well !
I was planning to anchor up and bait fish for the ground fish.

I was hedge trimming yesterday and even with bug spray, I was getting nailed every couple minutes and those damn little bastards aren't easy to kill. I don't ever remember them being like this on land, sure I've dealt with them on the boat for years, but I can't recall them being this bad miles from shore.

Just talked to a guy that said theres usually no issue until you get blood on the boat. Said he was fishing saturday and as soon as some blood got on the deck there were a hundred flies swarming.

They were everywhere on LIS sunday. I lost a couple quality fish due to trying to kick them off my legs while fighting a fish. Bug spray didnt work, and the little buggers would hunker down on the motor and rails and hang on for dear life going between spots. The only good thing about em is they are pretty slow fliers.

Out on Stellwagen on Sunday and the biting flies were terrible. I thought they were breeding on my boat somewhere and was ready to get a "bug bomb" and sanitize the boat. Glad to hear, I think, that this was just my problem.

Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

My Son in law wears the propane Thermacell when bear hunting in
Canada. Swears by it. Says they would carry him off without it.
Cabelas has them.
I've found Cutter Advanced the best for green flys fishing
the beaches and back bays.
If fish blood is attracting them I would try a Jomax/Bleach mix in a small
sprayer in the fish box and sorrounding areas, then rinse good.

It was like a mass exodus off of Rce Point last night after 6pm. They were a pain all day but got rediculous @ 6. I think thry are stable flies. If you notice, they tend to go for the ankles, where horses and cattle would not be able to use there tails to knock them away. That is scary trhey were so far off shore.
