I never met George, but have heard his name come up more than enough times in the stories of the 80's out on Block to feel like I knew him. He was one of the early needlefish makers that made plugs for Coleman and his crew. RIP.

The needles I saw were crude but effective. There is a step by step how to in Coleman's bass from the beach, volume one.

Although I have not seen him in many years, I knew and fished with George when I was in my 20's. Our paths crossed often at BI. I was living in Mystic and used to be in a RI Rod and Gun Club with him. I remember one time he had me over to his house and showed me his needle making operation. This was around 1980 or 81 and needles were the new hot lure. He gave me a handful of them. I had them in a plastic bag for years and a few years ago I passed them on to DZ for his needle collection. He knew all about them and seemed to appreciate them for their place in history. I think I still may have a couple someplace.

Sorry to hear of his passing. I know he was close with Tim Coleman at least he was back then and the two of those guys pounded a lot of beaches in the day.

Very sad news. I was in Tucson last week when Tim Coleman called me to let me know. Sandman did give me a few of his needles. I also did an extensive interview with George Thackery a few years back for my book project. I'll try and post some of that interview in the next day or two.

RIP Silent George
