The Springtime Eel Question

I know the "bait of choice" in the spring is the herring, but how soon till you normally switch over to eels? Are the bass so keyed in on herring and squid that they ignore eels or do you find that eels are a universal big fish bait.

To date, I have not had a lot of luck with eels in the spring, but that could be a result of fishing when I can rather than when I want to.....

caught my thirty pounder june 6 on eel last year off shore. started to drift eels from kayak the following week and did well, but have not really put any effort in fishing with eel during the month of may. i'll start eeling when "clammer"starts slinging them.
