I think with the guys are saying is there is no one reel rod combination that is perfect in all situations. My go to set up for plugging down there. Is a 10 foot super surf paired with a ZX2-22 20 pound Fireline. For jigging I use a custom breakaway 1209 with a VS250. 50 pound PP. For pencils currently I use an xSRA 1322 – 2 Paired with an empro 6500. 40 pound samurai. That set up is in a be replaced over the winter and the rod will be rewrapped conventional.

I think the choice boils down to two things, function of the reel and budget. Where the reel will be used in terms of the abuse it will see is directly related to budget. While some people choose to pack reels full with grease to act as a water intrusion prevention technique, this method requires a lot of time and additional maintenance. If you are swimming/wetsuiting at all, hopefully not in the canal, the ZB & VS reels are a no brainer. The surfcaster in general who puts in a lot of time, these reels are a high initial investment but in the long term a no contest winner. There are differences between these two reels other than pricing. One is how the line gets placed on the spool during retrieve. The VS has a recessed spools that "plunges" in and out of the rotor body, the line when initially place on the spool must be mounded and eventually works its way in to where it will lay on every cast. The ZB does not have this and the line lays on it like most spinning reels we are used to. The VS weighs significantly less than the ZB of comparable size, and the VS costs less than the ZB off the shelf. I would also say both companies offer some of the best technical service. Keep an eye out for guys selling their VS/ZBs on here, I don't think they last more than 5 minutes if the price is good.

If you are looking to not break the bank all at once, the options abound. Personally I have had great success with two reel brands. Penn and Shimano. I have a Stradic and Sustain love them both, good drag, retrieve speed, and smooth, they require maintenance frequently. I have had a penn reel since I was 8 (my first freshwater spinning reel) still works 22years later. Purchased the Battle as a backup reel this spring, smooth but I'm not thrilled with the drag. The new Spinfisher V looks promising, Penn is claiming that the 5500 & 6500 have 30lb max drag along with 39in/turn line retrieval, for $160 retail seems like good buy, but I suggest more research on this reel. Anyone have it yet? I think it's only been out for couple months.

For line, if you ask 100 people, tally the results, weed through to try and find the most common answer I think you'll be where you are right now. Personally I have 50pp original in olive on every reel I have except my conventional I have 50samuri (it's rounder/thicker). It it not necessarily "better" than any other brand, it is what I am confident in, from knots to cast-ability to longevity. I recommend use of backing on any reel spooled with braided line.

probably cant afford van stall so something under that price range.....been suggested the penn spinfisher....right now i have a cabo pt 60....sometimes its good other times it sucks....was just seeing what sb.com was using for some ideas....not swiming/wet suiting

I am addicted to Century rods, after trying out many and i mean many rods i fell in love with my 1327 and 1328 i don't think i would change them for anything, as far as reels its what fits your budget and needs, you can get some gen 1 Zee's for a reasonable price, but if price is a issue i love the Saragossa, so smooth and plenty of power, slap on a 10k and don't look back. On another note, you couldnt give me a free Penn surf reel.

You bring up a good point. A 1327 and a 14k saragosa would be a great combo for the ditch... if only that were available somewhere....

Reels - I use a few different ones. Stella 10K on my 1328 ,great all around set up for jigging or plugging. 1327 I alternate ZX27 and Saltiga Z4500 , I've used a saragossa 10K on it too and it was a great match balanced very nice. These are both 11' Century rods, also have an Arra 1205 I pair with the zeebaas for places like Cutty

I use a V reel with a 12 footer penn tork rod. It will Put the brakes on Any big bass that grabs my plug its light weight and new super slick line on it.

The 14K will be overkill on that rod. The 10K is all the reel you need. I use the 10K Stella on my 1327. Perfect set-up.

On my 3/4-4 10-1/2' Mojo I use the 8K Gossa.

Tough to beat a conventional at the Canal. Feeding out line is a lot easier when jigging and I like a conventional after hooking up. Yes most can cast further with a spinner but with practice that evens out and the advantages of the revolving spool when bouncing jigs is significant IMO.

IYou need a big reel that will hold at least 3000 yards of line. Braid is the way to go. A lot of people like 50 to 60 lb Power Pro now.

Rod has to be stout and able to cast the jigs to at least 4 and likely 5 OZ. There are many reels that fit this application and the Conventionals are generally less money than the high end spinners.

Agreed Mike -
14K is over kill, the biggest you need is a 10K. I used a 8k sphero's for a while that was a great reel for the $$ too
