M & D's is a full-service bait and tackle shop

Stopped in like I always do after fishing. Mike showed me a few things in the plug making room. I turned around and saw two new bottles of Etex sitting in the corner. I asked Mike where he got them and he said at Wareham Crossing Michael's. I said I would stop there on the way home. Mike then says wait I'll print you out a coupon. Because as we all know, you don't shop at Michael's without a coupon in hand. Mike proceeds to printout a 40% off one item coupon which I used. The Etex went from $35.00 and change to $21.00 and change. By the way I did use the extra to buy more plugs at M & D's.

classic shop...knowledgeable proprietors. There are fewer and fewer places like this. I can not tell you how many shops like this one have closed up shop in this "new economy".

A couple days ago while working on the boat I pulled a rag out of the rag bag. It was an old Covedge tackle shop tee shirt from the old shop. Digging down a little deeper I found a Barry Thurston tackle shop Nantucket. I use to have a ton of tackle shop shirts...I would always buy one when I went to a new shop but since I actually wore them over time they become a part of history like many of the old shops. I still have a drawer-full but they are crusty and my wife culls them out. I miss the old shops...they have an feel and a vibe you just can't get on the web.

I wasn't trying to shine anyone when I posted this. I have always been a fan of the small shops. The prices are better and knowing everyone when you walk in is the greatest. It was truly gratifying when Mike printed out the coupon for me. And as far as my purchase prior to leaving, it had nothing to do with the coupon.

I think that a brick and mortar shop needs a few things to survive:

Good selection, low overhead, and an online ordering adjunct. Plus, staff that makes anyone who walks in feel welcome. The days of the old curmudgeon behind the counter greeting newcomers with a grunt, don't cut it any more.

Two shops make me feel at home on the Cape, M&D's and Nelson's. I hate walking into a shop and getting the old "who's this butt hole" look. Never happens in these places and I appreciate this beyond words.

Many of you guys probably don't know that Mike's late father, Bill, ran CC Charlie's for a number of years, before he sold it to Gary. I was one of Bill's first regular customers. When Mike started M&Ds, I went in. Bill was there, and he took me right over to Mike, introduced me, and told him, "make sure you always treat this guy right".

But Mike treats everyone like that.

Bill was a great guy, and you know that old saying about apples never falling far from the tree. And all you need to know about what kind of a dad Mike is, is to meet Felicia.

Right about M&Ds - Surfland is the same way, great people, always very helpful and friendly. Always try to shop through my local tackle shops.

Sorry to go down a tangent here ... but on the larger local business scene ... while I try to shop locally as much as possible, some of the attitudes of these small, specialized boutiques is so crappy - so misaligned that they are doing themselves and our local towns a disservice by being short sighted ...

... most anything you can get in a local shop you can either get through a big box store or online ... and many of the online shops will service you better, as they know it's required for them to survive ... however that doesn't always translate to the small brick and mortar shops ... there is a small children's clothing shop in Newburyport where I used to shop for my daughter's clothes ... while it was a lot more expensive, the owner always treated us great and my daughter was very responsive to her in terms of selecting functional clothes and it made it easy for me ... but she hired a manager who is a complete idiot, and now I will not spend a cent in that shop - and I go overboard for my daughter so it is a loss for her ... but I am seeing this across the stores throughout the area ... it's a simple formula and easy, common decency ... unfortunately many lose site of it and their businesses won't last too long with that attitude ... especially in this economy.

That is why I like shops like M&Ds, Surfland, Saltwater Edge ... nice people, nice to people who come into the shop ... well stocked, leave one satisfied for shopping there. For the benefit of our local economies, hopefully these other idiots will catch on.
