Usually the sideplate needs replacing on the handle side. The one way bearing is pressed into it and most newer ABU reels they won't sell just the bearing. The one way bearing/clutch is usually what fails. You can open the reel and try and clean the bearing. They act up if they get a bunch of grease in that bearing.Call ABU with the serial number if you need parts.

Clean the bearing first. Unless the reel is old it should still be good. If you get oil or grease in it they can fail.

Vic, go to the auto parts store or Scott's house and grab a can of "Brakleen". Disassemble the reel until you get to the AR bearing. spray it good and long with the brakleen. let it dry for a while while you have a beer. then reassemble. Should be fine.

...I'm not a big fan of instant anti reverse, because it fails. The reels I use now have instant anti reverse and a regular, old fashioned, Abu style backup anti reverse, because the manufacturers know that the IAR on conventionals is a weak spot.

In my newer 7000 I reels the I (instant reverse) doesn't work that well but the dog, if clean, will.

Take the dog out, clean it off with some solvent so there is no grease left and clean the gear thing (technical name) it rides on on both sides as well, then pinch the dog together and put it back on. I had the same problem and am 95% sure that will fix yours. I don't know why those IAR bearings don't work in the 7000's??? Never had a problem in my 6500's.

Not to disagree with Stewie but I have had poor results with trying to strip the grease out of the IAR's on my 6500's (never done it on my 7000's with them) and they always seemed noisy/crunchy after that... the Dog will work well, if it's clean.

You can disagree with me, if I was always right, I'd hate myself.

I did the brakleen deal on my Saltist and it worked again. The IAR bearing isn't really open unless you take it apart, which I didn't do. Haven't taken apart my 7000iHSN yet(don't use it much). Didn't even know that it had a dog and pony anti reverse. On my 7000C3, I always put a dab of grease on the ratchet gear to assure that the dog would swing in and engage if the reel tried to go backward. Funny, the
C3 anti reverse never failed.

....and with my procedure, at least he gets to have a beer with Scott.

I had a 5500c3 that I modded with a bunch of aftermarket components from a distributor called Castaway Lakes. Turned the thing into a tuner and used it for light inshore. Unfortunately my stock AR bearing failed on me and I tried to remove it. Because the damned side plate is so thin, it bent the slightest amount, so little I didn't even notice at first. Basically it didn't run properly after that and I was told to get a new side plate. I miss that little baby....

I know! My old 7000's i could grease the #^&#^&#^&#^&e out of and they worked fine! I bought one of the Chinese iHSN's (FWIW, this is my favorite Abu ever, just had growing pains) and this happened to me and after a lot of jacking around I realized a) it was supposed to be a dual anti reverse and neither worked??? and b) if the dog and pony reverse wasn't almost completely clean, it would kinda sorta catch, but didn't at the worst possible times!

Beer drinking is a good excuse to fix #^&#^&#^&#^&e though, so carry on. You might want to use a torch though- beer drinking and torches add to the fun.

Vic, is that the red 7000i? From what i know about those i reels, and as with the i pro rocket I have, they have a dual anti reverse. So, is it possible for both the bearing and the dog to fail? Maybe

The dog and pony AR on my Saltist was so encrusted in salt dregs that it wouldn't move until I soaked it in alcohol for an hour.(I did no maintenance except for oil in the spool bearings for two years to see how it would do). I knew something was wrong when the handle started spinning the wrong way.

"if the dog and pony reverse wasn't almost completely clean, it would kinda sorta catch, but didn't at the worst possible times! " Gotcha, I'll keep those parts clean as a whistle(if I ever use it enough to need to service it)

Those A/R bearing can be replaced. I've never done one on an i reel, but have on 6500's. The dog is an easy fix. Hope it all works out for ya Vic.
