Nike Challenge Thread
Professor Moriarty was over the other day and we were talking Floyd Roman Nike's and he had with him an original and was kind enough to gift to me an unfinished body he copied from it. (Thanks Paul) I have always wanted to try some Nike's so now I got the bug! I turned a body yesterday and will progress to turn some more but I thought this might make a fun challenge? If anyone else might be interested in trying a Floyd Roman Nike copy over the winter months I thought all those who do could post their progress and finished results in this thread and it might be fun along the way for many of us and we might learn a thing or two and at the very least have fun watching each other go through the process! Anyone interested in joining in with me?

I just started working on these last week. A big 4.5oz and 2.5-3 oz one.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on a few different styles, should be a winner.

If you can send me one of the dupes you made I would try. Don't have access to this plug to make one. I recall Numby posting x-rays of this plug so I can figure out the weight placement from that.

here is a previous discussion on the larger Nike.
http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripert...kes-how-4.html
Larry is building the smaller one, which is my favorite. There are several sizes. I will take a pic and let you see one that is disassembled so you can see the weighting.

Here is the belly wgt location and the hook locations. You can get dim. from first post blueprint. Tail wgt is 5/16 dia by .600 long. I would drill the front belly hook hole for a large grommet as you will need a long swivel to reach the thru wire, thus it will be a bigger diam. swivel, as it is a pretty fat plug at that point. The original used screw eyes. Thru hole is drilled on center. I put a 1/4" c'bore on front angle to allow for a smoother nose grommet fit. I bandsaw angle and sand in the final dim. at 40 degree angle. This plug will swim pretty deep and with a very nice wiggle. It is a winner and I like this size better than the larger size but that is just my opinion.

Eric he posted that x ray for the larger size I believe. Larry is making the slightly smaller size, the one I posted. If he can't send you one I will. I got a few left and just cut stock last nite to make more this winter.

What wood was used on the originals?

I just finished turning up 10. I have always used AYC and this time I made a couple out of AWC but I would think they used pine maybe but they are pretty old so I really don't know what was the predominate wood used back then. Probably what ever they could get their hands on. The one I have is fairly light so I say pine, maybe
In the one I documented I said smaller but it is still 6.5 inches long so not that small. Just smaller than the large one. Maybe Peter, VB, will post a picture of all the sizes as I know he has all the sizes in brand new condition in triplicate. ,,not fair.

Prof. , Thanks for posting the drawing and specs for the Nike, got one turned tonight and it looks pretty good, going with one hook though. It's all drilled and in the sealer now, will post some pics tomorrow.

Any other info on the larger Nike you may have??
Got this from the old thread:
The angle of the diving plane appears to be 35 degrees. The plane is 2 1/4 inches long and 1 inch wide. The protrusion on the front of the plug is obviously also 1" dia and projects forward about 1 1/8 inch.
The plug is 7 1/2 " long. It is 1 3/4 ' wide at it's widest, about 3 " from the nose. The last 1 1/4' of the plug is a straight barrell, 3/4 " in diameter.
Thanx...Lou
The tail hook is 2 1/4 from the rear, the front hook is 2 1/2 " from the nose and there is 2 5/8" between them.
Wanna do this one too!!

Here is my attempt - Thanks for the diagram proff.
It works well - It is not as fat as I would like because I only had 1.5" stock but I still like it. I will definitely make more it was fun to build.

cool read
Cool read thanks guys.Nice to see different varieties of a classic.
Its a cool plug to build that gets you thinking alot,
well,me anyways.
I did some for a swap last winter & had fun doing them, they have a nice tight wiggle to them in a strong current,it seems that mine love current, the stronger the better, they also dart nice in the edy's.I also used ayc with the best results,.I tried wrc & wc with poor results.
