Tautog opens on Thursday in Rhode Island

Tog opens this Thursday in RI (3 fish limit/person)

I know many people wait till fall to fish for these, but there are a lot of tog in the bay. Last year I caught my personal best tog, by accident while diamond jigging (deep water) for BSB, caught during that first week of August.

Spoke to 2 of our navy divers recently and they have been seeing a lot of tog lately. They were taking a new diver down for his 2nd open water dive to get his dive quals in about 45 feet of water over near Fort Adams. I've never fished for tog there, but they spear fish that area and said it's gonna be a great year for tog.

I will be out Thursday afternoon scouting around for tog. seems like good tides. I always do best on that initial rise from low to high. I've often wondered if the tog seem more active on the lower end of tides due to the bait crabs being more concentrated....
