Repower
I’m getting sick of listening to thunks, bumps, changes in noises during operation, and overall just dealing with my current motor.
(Im also drooling over an extra couple feet overall but that will be a different thread later in the off-season.)
What are the general thoughts around repowering a relatively old boat (‘00)? Worth rolling the dice on a good looking HO 4 stroke? Buy new? Avoid certain makes/models that are 10+ years old?
I’d really like to be able to appreciate the benefits of a 4 stroke at this point, and would like the opportunity to add a bit of power. Obviously I’m going to digest the feedback from this discussion for a while as I weigh it against upgrading the whole package (boat and motor) but figured I’d start with just power...
Thoughts?

21’ Hydrasports CC (not vector)
If I decide going bigger is in the cards, repower will not be happening. This is to help me if the decision is to keep the hull.

I repowered too soon .I should have run my my original 2 stroke until it blew .but 9 years & 1200+ hours I traded it …...dumb f uck .for a 4 stroke .yep super quiet , but I should have upped the HP / now this one is 8 years old ..But not this time …...the way they run & what they cost ..I figure I,ll quit before it does

I’d say if you’re going to move up to new to u , don’t repower...
My guess is the return on investment on a new motor if you do sell will fall short...
My 04 rig has 24- 2500? Hrs. , over 2k of that I put on her in 6-7? Seasons...
Having a boat with the engine worth twice the value of the hull doesn’t make sense to me... IMO
plus, u need room for that growing family... she’ll understand...

She’s supportive of the move up, but my ability to just “throw er on the hitch and go” starts to get complicated as I drool over 24’s, given that I just found out that since my 21 is wider than 8’6” I’ve actually been needing a wide load permit the whole time I’ve owned it... So at this point new boat = new truck = all kinds of other new things... I’m evaluating avalanche avoidance tactics with the repower conversations
I was thinking I might be able to find a haul off for ~5-7k and get something like the best of both worlds, but I’m aware what a crap shoot used outboards are...
