Seals

Just saw a few seals feeding right at the end of my driveway on the Sakonnet. First I’ve never seen seals this far north in RI and second I’m assuming herring or early squid? What else is in the water this time of year? Huge flock of gulls working the leftovers. Never seen anything like this.

I have seals almost at the end of my street and I'm 6 miles up the bay from you.

Yeh, river herring are in the bay.

Seals go all the way to APEX in central falls in search of ponies, making them true APEX predators.

Me too Mike. Big Gray seals followed DZ, Bob Huddy and myself all around the Block this past November.

No boat, back in the suds.

do ya wanna know how long they have been in the upper bay ???? look up whenever dan Head ran a striper tournament call Rocky point .its the only one I remember ever being held in the spring .

we were fishing buckies in a small river that had been really good for us in the spring for years .
Bang .... I,m on .fish is taking off .. and I,m in a battle and my partner at the time is using a stiff conventional setup .............bang .his like is going steady out ...... took about ten seconds for him to realize hes into a large .going the other way than mine .... I,m fighting one way and hes holding on the other .......now I,m watching his because its going quicker .....who do we chase ???? we quickly got the answer .mine .His just stopped .........reel in and 1/2 a herring .aint no bluefish .up pops the seal .. I finally get mine in .... Its a good fish .we fish some more but the bite is iver [seal] we run to Rocky point an it 36+ pounds /in first place ..............next day we boat a few more up to 20# and it dies ...his mom wanted a couple of winter flats . so we decided to make a drift before we went to bring those fish to the tournament .... in a couple of minutes we caught a small 6" shiny colorful fish ........ we had no clue / wasn,t a jack or runners we have caught them a few times .. we get the flats an make the run . we weigh our fish and we brought these [fish] to be Id .. SQUETEAUGE } they were all excited / no one had see any in 30 years .that was the beginng of the run we had here that eventually ended with the end of the cycle with Squits being 12 - ?? # caught mostly on pogies
end of story .....BTW I ended up in 3rd place a 38 & 37 beat me but we walked away with the team title ............. back in a time I was to young an foolish to fish tournaments

ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE !!!

I bet they would make a Pissa winter coat.
The rest could be Alpo.

May fortune favor the foolish....
