Cuttyhunk question

Is Cuttyhunk more of a fall spot or is it good in the spring as well?
Is it worth the trip in May? I would be surfcasting.

Never..... I repeat, NEVER! turn down a trip to fish Cuttyhunk... If anything use it as a scouting mission for the fall.
When you see rusted bolts sticking out of bug rocks in the surf... well, you might want to fish there

A friend of mine who lives on the Vineyard beach fishes there all the time. He's taken three fish in the forty-pound range in June. I should say an Island very close to Chuttyhunk, a stone throw away. Bombers.

June would be better but as said before take the time to feel it out . If you do go be sure to fish small as the big girls will not be that plentifull yet. And as Slipknot would say be sure to hit Canawoop"ass" channel at the east end too.

ImO....I think May's a tough mounth out there. When the water warms up on the main land is when I head out there. I spoke with the guys that run the alert II outa NB (they see alot surf caught bass) and the bigger surf caught fish starts in July. Don't get me wrong theres fish out there during in may and june but its far easier to get on them out of a boat then it is to learn and cover the rugged turf of Cutty.

why not! I do. they are private but fished waters are out of sight especialy at night.

The Shore is free land. Don't play 'billy goat' and climb up a bluff as you will then be on some ones private property.
Look for the big rocks with the rust stains. That is where the "Bass Stands" used to be.
Most of the folks that make PIA of themselves about 'private property' are not there till mid june so just be decent and don't leave nothing but foot steps behind.
I would suggest small surface lures for daytime and when you find the little ones ganged up put on a big swimmer and fish deep under the twinkies.
Based on the moon last Monday I would try the West End at an hour before high tide till a couple after high tide and then work your way East on the beach in the moonlight!
It will be as cold as a well drillers butt on that beach but the walking and casting will keep you warm!

It is way to early to work the Rips around there! It will be at least July before any thing of any size shows up in the Rip's!

Had a friend who had a house there and has invited me to come over for years, just never made it - hadn't seen him in a coupla years and just found out he passed away not quite a year ago.

He was a former BFT record holder in tht Atlantic Tuna Club, had the tail of the tuna over the door of his CH house. Used to keep his last boat Oyster Stu in the harbor there.

in CT my understanding that private property only goes as far as the mean high tide mark. below that is fair game. it is just a matter of accessing the land. i am not sure of the laws in MA.

That was my understanding also. anything below high tide mark is fair game......although it would be nice to see it in writing somewhere

Property lines in Mass extend to the low water mark. However, the public at large has a right of free passage below high and low water for purposes of fishing and waterfowling.

As long as you can acces the shore without crossing private property, you're in the clear legally for fishing.

Contact the Massachusetts State Attorney General's Office and ask for the pamphlet on shore access. It outlines the law in plain English and is very informative. Yes, you can fish anywhere in the "intertidal zone" or "wet sand area" but you cannot cross private property to get there. It's a tiny bit more complicated than that, and the section on "adverse liability" is very, very interesting, so try to get a copy if you can. They used to send it free of charge but it was written when Scott Harshbarger (sp.?) was the AG, so it may be out of print. Worth a try, though. I carry a copy in my plug bag, and it has saved me more than once in a situation that could have become quite ugly.

Hey Sandbagger or whatever....The freaking post was a statement regard Cuttyhunk you want to stir crap go sit on your surf stick! If you had a name it might be posted on the Hunk so they would not allow your sorry axx on the Island at all.

nor-easter, loosen your drag!...you have misunderstood my post, Read it post again, I was not trying to stir anything. Just understand the law.

My question was in regard to your statement about free land and in effect tresspassing, which I assume was in reference to the states early law about being able to walk on the "wet sand" (between high and low tides) if you are fishing or fowling. If it is an enforced state law, (which I think it is) it should apply to anyplace in the state, not just cuttyhunk. All MA islands. I called the the att'y general office to get more details this after getting some useful respones from other (more polite) members. They will be sending me some add'l info.

There really is no need to respond in such a hostile manner.

Cuttyhunk is part of the Town of Gosnold, Dukes County, Commonwealth of Massatwo#^&#^&#^&#^&s....BUT, it is a different world.
The Cuttyhunkers try to keep the beaches and shore of the Island free and available.
If you want to fish Nashawena or Pasque by the shore route it can be arranged but must be well in advance. There are caretakers on all of the Elizabeths. Naushon can be fished but there again, one has to know who to speak with and when. The "easy" answer is that Nashawena, Pasque and Nashon are Private Property.
I was blessed to know the Caretakers years ago and have been allowed to hunt Ducks and Geese and even ride the horses. When I was nine I stayed a week with Mr. Olsen on Pasque and was taken all over the Island, surf casting and reaping the harvests of the Ponds and Streams.
Unfortunatly, there are too many people around today to try to do those things. But, if you know the right folks and go about it right, you would be amazed what one could do.
I can offer an apology, after you offer yours for doubting me when I posted that the Beaches are free. I think you have found by your own research that the beaches are free for fishing and fowling.

I am in the middle of an Historical, Hysterical story of the past fifty years Guiding on Cuttyhunk. The who, 19 guides over the past 50 years;the what;a compilation of the large fish and who caught what and when; and the where in the waters from Squibby to Westport and from Naushon to West of Cuttyhunk.
The answer to the Lady that asks,"What did you use to catch that Fish?" "Why, a hook, mamm!"
Biographical sketches of the Guides, stories of their boats, where they were built and by whom.

I have been at it for 5 years and am still plugging along working at it as I can. It hopefully will be finished and printed in another year or so.
Any of you folks out there that have fished the Hunk and have photos of trips, I would love to have prints that I can make prints of and will publish them with credits.
