If your not sleeping over kids asking for help then thats your problem. Alot of families can't afford to pay for sports or band uniforms ect. You tired of giving then stop, you don't need to start a bitch thread about it.

Bigfish, have you considered donating some plugs to the 'Children Without Plugs Foundation'?? Think of all those children just standing on the beach without plugs, just staring at the bass blitzing just within casting distance...

Unless those kids have a gun in the hand that isn't out, you could say "hasta la vista" and truck on by

Here's the "why"---those kids have moms, and maybe even a dad or two, who do the family grocery shopping. If Stop&Shop was to say no, the organization would tell all those parents that mean old Stop&Shop didn't allow fundraising, and those parents would switch over to Shaws.

My kids play all kind of sports. It costs a lot of money, and the organizations can only ask the parents to pony up so much. They try to keep it affordable and often times let kids play even if their parents can't afford the registration fee. Less than 40% of the cost of running a youth sports league comes from registration fees. The rest comes from sponsors and fundraisers. The same businesses who sponsor these teams are also pretty good about letting the teams make up the difference by setting up tables outside and asking patrons for a buck or two.

It's a fact of life for parents of kids in the organizations---get over it.

Lightbulb here's a thought or two

you can shop online and have your food delivered by peapod.
you can go to a new electrical job and save the knockouts that look like quarters. You can always bring along something that you wish to donate,,,say your lucky pebble,,,,worth far greater than a small sum of money. Tell them uncle sam took all your charitable donation money. You gave at the office. A big striped bass stole your wallet.or.... you already donated to the Free michael Jackson Fund.

Yeah... I agree w/ this post 100%!

I give too, when I can. But, I have a rule of thumb... If a charity ASKS me for a donation, the answer is no!

If a charity has a booth / table set up, and it is a charity I deem worthy (God knows there are many that are not) I will drop some cash in. There are others that I routinely contribute to as well.

But again, they ask for it, they get nuttin'!

On occasion I am bothered by groups at the supermarket asking for donations. If I have some change I'll usually toss it in, but I draw the line with groups that aren't even from our town looking for a handout. Sometimes if I don't know who the group is that's asking for the money, so I'll stop and grill them and more than once I've said to their parents who hover nearby, "I would have donated if your kids could have told me what the money would be used for. But they don't seem to have a clue." It makes no sense for kids to go asking for a handout if they don't even know what it will be used for. But the absolute worst is when you have older kids and they're holding out their can for you to drop your change, but totally ignoring you because they're yapping about something else. To them I firmly respond, "What? Donate? You absolutely have to be kidding me." BigFish, it's ok to say no or just not respond, I also recommend the tact of saying you'll get some change for them on the way out and then use the exit where they're not camped out, you can also avoid eye contact with them (the old, "Oh I didn't even see you there"), and finally, I also recommend, "I think my wife already got ya just a little while ago."

Out side the local supermarket here we not only have the wheelchair guy, the kids w/candy but also a gentleman(?) who seranades us with 1960's Italian- American love songs at FULL volume to which he ocassionally chimes in. He is there almost every afternoon too and has been forever! BTW I am an Ital-Amer so I am qualified to judge the music and its really annoying!

Lots of charity's are a joke !

In my town we have this place where you donate you old car, truck or boat, ect.... Helping Hands Of America
You donate and they give you a form for a tax deduction, and they re-sell the car, and that amount is supposed to go to the charity, but what they don't tell you is the amount they donate is only 8%
The remaining 92% goes to administration costs.
This place calls themselves a NON-PROFIT orginization.
What a joke !!!
Lots of charitys are the same !!!

Hate to tell you Larry, but you seem to be doing a little freaking out yourself in that post right there. I'm sure Jenn read your post just fine. And you do seem to come up with one thing or another lately to complain about. And another thing, you come across as quite arrogant when you say you "pretty much guarantee that I am more forthcoming towards charities than yourself," How would you know? I think that's a little extreme, need we remind you this is a fishing board?. Ya the GOF is for venting but some of us have every right to post on one of your threads, try not to kneejerk react when someone does post a not so favorable post on one of your threads and things will go much smoother.

I did in fact read the whole thing thank you very much AND I never said that you didnt contribute. My point was that you are bitching about others trying to raise money and thats just not fair (doesnt mean you have to give to everyone) are you involved in any organization that has asked for donations at any time????? If so then what gives that organization the right to try and raise funds????? Most of us have been or are involved with an association that at some point in time needs to raise money. So live and let live (again doent mean you need to give to everyone)

youre right I dont know you and you dont know me and thats fine because not eveyone has to like each other. It just seems you are always very defensive online and dont like to hear what others have to say.....your way or no way. If you really arent that type of person if real life you may want to think about how you are perceived online because that is how you come across.

I hope you understand my post and dont twist it to something it isnt.

I have to concur with one of the posters about groups coming into my town and asking for donations. I'm not going to donate to some out-of-town groups that I have no clue about, when I know the little leaguers, girl scouts, boy scouts, whatever, are going to be around asking for a donation. That's when I'll chip in, because it improves the quality of life in town for those boys and girls. And to me, boys and girls are the future of my town, and it pays to keep them happy so they keep coming back as doctors and lawyers(sic!!!) in this town.
