Albecore / Tuna what tackle?

I was out at Block Island on Saturday and ran into some small tuna working on baitfish, I tossed everything in my bag at them including: deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s (blue), mega-baits, yozuri crystal minnows,

It was aggrevating to say the least as I was often right on top of them and they were breaking all around me.

What works????????

I like the Murderous Richards (Deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s - hehehehe) in green and the megabait jigs in green, silver/chrome, and bronze patterns myself. You may want to tie a tiny sparkled green fly if your missing fish on the main rigs (theory as I have not needed to try that). A couple other little tuna favorites are the Stinger, The Hammer (MV Lure - might be hard to find in Rhody), and the Mariah. Personally (not that I'm an old hand on Albies and Bones) my favorite colors in order: Green, plain silver/chrome, bronze, blue, and red... They can be real finicky so make sure you have a few of each...

How about the tackle and presentation? I am using a spinning outfit Penn 4500/ 8' Star Rod, 14lb test Green Silver Thread line, I have a 3' leader of 20lb Yozuri Flourocarbon line, and a small snap swivel? Anything wrong there?

Personally, I would tie direct to my main line. With good line and a properly set drag, I'm have little fear of getting chopped off. From what I've been told and shown by some tuna crazy people (FW & BC) the less the better...

The rod and reel should be OK ( I haven't used that line before)... I use an 8' G-Loomis with an ABU 5500C3 conventional spooled with 15# Big Game green and it works great with 3/4 to 1.5 oz metals. Your gear should be OK to although with a slightly lighter reel like the 4500 you may need to chase them around a bit... I'm building an 8' St Croix Spinning to try out and hope to have that done in time...

Tie directly to your lure and reel as fast as possible. Thay have no problem catching up to your lure! Some days these fish will hit nothing. Bonito are great eating but Albies are terrible.

I'd use clear line like BG, 12# test and a direct tie.

In addition to the lures mentioned above also try a 007 jig, crippled herring (green/silver), small Kroc spoons, Sweedish Pimple jigs (both large and small sizes), and 1/4 or 1/2 oz. white bucktails (if you can tie them yourself so much the better - make them long and flowing).

If any of those jigs come with a treble hook replace it with a single hook.

Also try varying the retrieve and fast/slow/fast. Sometimes they follow without taking.

Thanks for the information everyone, I think my problem may have been in the retrieve as it was pretty slow for sure. Hope to catch one soon.

Have a good week all as I am off to the Cape for the rest of the week I have to see about this Cape has better fishing that RI b/s, haha....!
