JULY 9,Friday morning, headed out of GREEN HARBOR, fog was in an held low all the way out. not a boat in sight but LOBESTERMEN
PULLING POTS, we were out w/ the intention of HOOKING a BLUE SHARK, on the FLY. BUT did TROLL for TUNA , at the BANK,up -to-an over it. only one outher boat out there fishing TUNA, he was ankered, tied off.fishing live bait (blue fish), we headed to the NORTHEAST CORNER, SHARK WATERS, 340' we started a chum slick an did this for about 3 hours, one HELL of a SLICK out there, birds were eating an having a good time, while we waited for the big guys to show, we EAT, DRANK, smoked some GREAT CUBAN'S an shot the breeze, what a day to do NOTHING. we also had some COD RODS on board so we tried JIGGING, not a tap. charlie said might as well POWER CHUM, so we put the last 4 pack in the bucket an watched it go out. the fog lifted an the sun was GREAT, I grabbed the outher penn slammer an started jigging, the jig I was using looked like a BIG SLAMMER SQUID about 8" an w/ tenticales hanging down Im guessing BUT Id say I was about 15' off bottom an BAM, the rod bent, the line went taught an I felt one BIG head TURN, an then another, OFF it went, charlie looked at the reel an said TIME to START the boat befor I run out of line 100yds went out like nothing, buy the time he turned the boat I was down to maby 50-60 yds, BUT we started to take up line, we got over him an he tugged again an headed DEEPER, I started to gain some grond on him an he started to come up so I thought, I could feel the tention in the line, it was VIBERATING so I had to release some presser, he started moving again an SNAP, he was gone. Charlie said whenyou hook a big blue some time the thrashing of it's tail will cut the line.
so much for trying to catch a BIG BLUE on a jigging rod. it was fun while it lasted, Id guess an say it was around 400lb blue shark, crussing the water comming up on the chum,WE WILL be back.
heres a pic 1. of the squid rig, 2. Tuna rod, an 3. you can just see the rig off to the side of the wake.
GOOD LUCK GOOD FISHIN
