It's BI time!

Heading up to BI on my annual trip in 2 weeks.

Any last minute tips, reports or insights would be appreciated.

Thanks.

no I brought my kids over with a handful of jigs just to get in on the night action. (frankly, it was fun catching them last year)

Well, maybe in a couple weeks the squid (and bass) will show up. No one had seen them as of yet in either harbor.

I have plans to be there over the weekend of the 27th plus a day or so on either side. But if I hear it breaks wide open prior to that I will leave then next day. And I may do a one nighter sometime next week to keep abreast of the situation. Maybe I will see you skulking around the rocks some night.

West Islip? I grew up in Bay Shore.

Yea, we're arriving on the 27th. I hope it improves by then.

Squidding is a big part of the fun of BI.

Got some real "submarines" last year!

Nice tube!

It was fun. I ended up washing this guys nearby boat down after we were done, the ink was everywhere. I am sure they will show by then, the water temp is falling now.

(I checked in Old Harbor (that is where I caught the most last year) and New Harbor (Paynes) and both places were quiet.
Kids were bummed but if they show we make make a special squid trip some night.

Old Harbor...hmmmm...Where in Old Harbor? Any place to plug in a light?

I usually just go to Paynes.

Generally right behind the Commerical guys by ballards (who seem to leave their powerful cockpit lights on all night)

If paynes is weak, check out old harbor. Last year both places produced but at old harbor they seemed to be there nearly all the time. We even saw locals fishing them at sunset. Perhaps I was a little early to be seeking the almighty tube.

You bring a light? I would not know where to plug it in. I have been just using the lights from the dock and fishing boats and these white/pink/and glowinthedark squid jigs. I was surprised to see how aggressive they are! Also they can bite! They have like a beak of sorts. The big ones can actually take out the drag of a light setup!

How have you been fishing them?

Had some subs like above that took drag! Funny when the bait puts up as good a fight as the gamefish!

The ambient light from the dock doesn't seem to be enough. I have a 500 watt halogen work lamp I picked up at Home Depot for $10. I just plug it into the dock outlets. The power at Paynes seems to be on until Halloween. After that you need a Coleman. I've seen guys bring down some really HUGE lamps! Didn't help them as much however.

I use a home made jig a local showed me (gave me) a few years ago. Works like gang-busters!!! The Yozuri's work very well too but soooo much more expensive. The tear drop jigs don't cut it.

I'll take a look at old harbor if Paynes isn't producing. Only once did I fail to get squid at Paynes and then I think the tide was just too low.

Jaiem,

Have a safe trip and catch all those fish that should have been hanging at westerly.

Keep us updated on how Lisa's friend is doing. The one with the shattered ankles. I think of her often. Hope she is doing better.
