Musso style metal lipped swimmers

The beginnings of a project... I really like the shape. The body is about 6 1/2" long made of poplar, 2 - 2 1/2 oz. with hardware. Paint them all white. I'm going to do 9 total. Three each with the following lips, NJT Lefty 2, NJT Danny2 lower slot, NJT Danny upper slot. Per each lip the following weights. One no weight. One with one belly weight centered on the balance point and the last with two belly weights each about 1/4" either side of the balance point of the wood. I want to see what all the various combinations do. Plan to video them all. Fun winter project... :-)

That is a sweet plug.
It calls for a Lefty #2 with a hole near the top. I am working on it right now. Next run ill have a bunch.
Musso made some of the finest swimmers of all time . Not trying to name drop, but i spent a couple hours at montauk with him one afternoon, what a wealth of knowledge that man is and so willing to share it . I guess we all know the Block Island Needlefish story.
Let me know how those swim. I think you will really like that plug.

Tinman. Thanks for the rememberances and the insight as to how he made them. I'm working from a small picture tryingto extrapolate dimensions etc. Have to get some of those high slot lefty's when you get 'em done!!!

Excellent idea on the experimenting. Thats definitely the way to go about learning how something works. The cool thing is that you'll pick up other pointers along the way that will help you in figuring out how to tweak the plug or modify the design to better fit the conditions you fish.
