Kayak?????
Anyone know anything about Kayaks?
I'm thinking about selling my boat, it's just been sitting since I screwed up my back anyway. I want to be able to still get out on the water so I was thinking a Kayak. What do you guys recommend ? If weight is an issue, I'm 6' 215#'s. What accessories are need with a kayak also? I want one built for fishing of course.
Thanks, Dave

I can recommend a great Kayak dealer who can help you a great deal and is a great guy. Berwick Marine in West Bridgewater Ma. right off route 24 (not too bad a ride from your local) he is also going to be at the MSBA Show the 19th and 20th if you happen to be coming to it. The owners name is Bruce and he is a great guy to talk to about "Yaks". I give you the phone number and addy if you want?

He has some great "built for fishing" models to look at. I was down there a few weeks ago and he has some great Yaks and accessories.

I just got a Prowler13 (angler addition) from Ocean Kayak. I haven't got her in the water yet, but it sure looks pretty cool. All set up for fishing with molded in rod holders. Stuff I've been looking into for accessories are things like PFD's, wetsuits, and leashes for rods, paddles, and yourself (if you are ever going to be in fast moving water).

If you got a Bum Back make sure you get a Back Rest for it, last thing you want is your back screaming once you get out there.

Dave,
I hurt my back last year as well. I have a 14' Pamlico Angler with the systems 3 seat. The only problem I have run into is when you are in it for extended periods of time you get stiff. Your welcome to stop by and take mine for a paddle.

Definitely invest in a high back seat if you have a bad back. I got a surf-to-summit GTS seat. They are not cheap but if you're in pain, you won't use the kayak either. Also, with a sit-on-top, you can hang your legs over the sides to relieve the pressure (and wake your ass up) and get on/off easier.
King Cove sells Wilderness Systems kayaks. The Tarpon is their line of sit-on kayaks that are easy to setup for fishing.
The 120 is a nice kayak for fishing in estuaries and inshore. It's not a speed demon but it's a good all around boat to start with.
The 140 may be more seaworthy and would cover more distance but at your weight you will always have 1 to 2 inches of water in the cockpit since the floor is flat.
Check out the Prowler13 also. If I didn't already have 3 kayaks, I'd have one of those.
Most kayaks that come rigged for fishing have rod holders in the back. You might want to think about a holder in the front so that you don't need to turn and reach. My preference is a RAM tube up front for trolling a tube.

agreed
I view a PFD is like a paddle. Not an option.
Dressing for the water/weather is almost as important. If you are unprepared, the PFD will just make it easier to find your body. I generally wear waders and a drytop (sealed wrists, neck and waist) with the PFD over it or a wetsuit with the PFD if it's warmer.
There are several other safety items that I take as well as the fishing related items. I know that this isn't a kayak fishing site but it might not hurt to have a thread that lists the items that you shouldn't be without for the benefit of those thinking of getting into it.
It sure is a fun way to catch.

What are my options for hauling a Yak in the bed of my pickup?
14" yak in a 6' bed isn't gonna go over too well.
Thanks for all the replies.

There is a kayak rack that fits into a standard 2 inch receiver. It is basically a T that sticks into the receiver.

I toss a foam block on the tail gate and use them wratchet strap thinggies to secure the back, then I toss another foamy thinggie on top the cab and wratchet strappie thing on that too... then I wratchet the chit outta bof'um. You guys redesign the wheel waaay too often.
F18, get yourself two of those foam block things, and a pair of wratched straps, and frikkin winch that suckah down.
