Canal control ticketing boaters?

Don't know how much of the story or who's version I got but...
Freind reports another freind was fishing around the pilings opposite the Maritime Acedamy and the Onset channel with a bunch of other boats when canal control boat came racing out and started handing out tickets for fishing in canal. Freind of freinds boat supposedly left for Mashnee Flats to avoid this but CC boat followed them up there with there ticket. Dont know if something precipitated this like getting in the way of canal traffic.....or it being a holiday weekend ......
Where does the canal start regarding boat fishing? I assume it is not at the Maritime Acedemy. End of stone jetty?

Maritime crewmen hollared at another freind for fishing to close to the training ship citing 'Homeland Security zones.'

You cannot be within I think 500 yards of MMA in a boat.

And its always been that you're not allowed to fish from boat in the canal, its a hazard to navigation in a controlled channel, they just never enforced it.

Lol, I was casting right under the ship and waving to the crew last year.
Sounds like they started enforcing too.
All good things must come to an end..............

But where does it start and can you fish the edges of the channel?

As long as you're well past MMA and out of the channel you're safe.
They will ticket if you're fishing in the channel, just be aware of where you are.

Last year the canal patrol came up and spoke to me twice about fishing in the shipping lane. I was a few hundred yards south(or west) of the west end. I was trolling by a small mud hump just east of the pilings. Are the pilings considered part of "the shipping lane?" I thought we were off to the side and out of the shipping lane. The first time they were nice. Not the second time. Anyone know?

Just called Canal Control out of curiosity/boredom.

No fishing within the Canal itself (which everyone knows)
No fishing in channel limits.
Outside the bouys in Hog Island Channel.
The piling structure is considered part of the channel as its for holding barges and whatnot.

The officer on duty was unaware of any restrictions around MMA, but if they're docking/undocking (or planning on it) a patrol vessel will be out and will ask all boaters to leave the area.

Its definitely about safety, if you're drifting across a channel and a barge is bearing down on you and you can't start your engine. Buhbye boat.

Pamphlets with this info are available at Canal Control and apparently at the area ramps that are on/near the canal.

And a link to the navigation regulations: http://www.nae.usace.army.mil/recrea...ion/navreg.htm

Me and my dad fish all the time near thoes pilings, even with the patrol boats driving by? mabey because were just casting and not trolling around? Oh yeah, that big hill there with the sign on it, dont fish there, theres no fish at all , i think the canal patrol is trying to stop the guys fishing right in the middle of the channel , i see it every time we go out trolling right down the channel , than they wonder why you fly by them at 30. just wait one day you'll be fishing in the fog there and you wont even here the RIBS with a 4stroker on it sneek right up on ya

later

They're cracking down harder this year because of the number of boaters.
Stay out of the channel, enough said.

Heck I'll stay out of Buzzards Bay! What I laugh at lately are the C.G. go fast boats doing donuts by the MMA then zipping up and down the canal. I know - "Homeland Security." Looks more like a joy ride to me though. Got to love the toys for the job though. I'm jealous

The coast guard out of Woods Hole always goes into a couple of harbors in the area, you think they're actually looking for anything?

If there gonna start enforcing the law to a T then I think they also need to ride around in some of the channels with a sharp knife for all the pots

Yeah...enforce laws. They SWAMPED Uncle Matt and I last year, yelled at us for fishing in the channel when we were OUTSIDE the cans and the Canal Patrol Inflatable was doing donuts right in front of their office. 10 mph? Yea right. They fly around along with the CG boats.

They should Police themselves first......I hate those idiots!

Yup---every morning, first light, the Canal is smooth as glass, and here comes the Canal Control wide open, running to the east end and back throwing about a 6' wake

Then they spend the rest of the day telling outboards on plane to slow down

A: Don't whine here, if you have a valid complaint file it with Canal Control and the USCG.
B: If you don't have a valid complaint, stop being a googan.

"stop being a googan" ???
You don't mean MikeP do you?
He is so far from a googan it isn't funny.

I can see the safety issue with more boats around.
Ya have to stay outside the channel markers.

I remember times a few years back early mornings with 10-15 boats all just drifting right in the middle of the channel near Hog island in thick fog, now THAT is googan.

You are right about the motor not starting thing

You know what I mean and I know you've seen them before. (Didn't mean MikeP.)

Kinda like the guy anchored outside of Padanaram we almost ran down on the sled Saturday in the fog @ 12 knots.

He's prolly still cleaning out his pants.
