Split rings...

I have seen the emphasis the past few seasons on beefy split rings, especially since the triple rings came into popularity. My question is this, though: Who has had a split ring fail on a plug? Personally, I have had snaps open up, swivels tear right out of the plug, line break, hooks straighten, through wiring tail loops straighten out, and screw eyes pull from a plug. But, I have yet to have a split ring fail. I use Sampo 4H on smaller stuff and Sampo 6 or 7 (forget exactly) on larger stuff.

I in no way feel that going with triple rings is overkill or shun those who use them, I just have never personally run into an issue. When my current supply of normal rings runs low, I'll be replacing them with triples.

Toby. I use Triple Split Rings on ALL my Plugs..... You could Tow a Truck with them. Some have caught Giant GT's to 100 lbs and others have caught LARGE Bass with NO FAILERS. If you need I know Where to Find .

I had one go Wide open Last fall toby. I reached down to pop the treble outta the fishes jaw and just pulled the treble. I was like wtf.. then I realized that the tail hook (single siwash) was planted on the fish as well, I looked at the plug, and sittin there was a nice u shaped piece of wire, that at some point must've been a split ring...

Domination takes full concentration..

I also have had some failures.Since i started changin em all out to the 4h 5h an 5.5H I have had no problems wit bass.Blues are bad when u get a few gorilla's u get em on land an they start rollin an flippin. That'll cause some damage.usually a set o korkers an some good force ends that. Some companys like yo zuri put inferior rings on their plugs they get changed right away. Its' a by product of the low strech braided lines...hav't gone to triple on many plugs yet some plugs i think they just won't fit properly on.That could cause lure action problems as well as the ring perhaps threadin itsell on the wire which could cause failure's/i think.i wanna get me some o that Trevally action.

I had one open on a 7" bomber a couple years ago. Fish was mid-20s and was flopping on shore when it broke. Other than that never had any fail, but i dont fish in heavy current too often.

Had problems till I went to #6 splits on my plugs. Then you could pull trucks with them.

No boat, back in the suds.

I really like that Wolverine triple #5. Especially on my surface swimmers. I think the added width is actually a benefit as it holds the hook a touch closer to the plug and it seems real strong. No issues at all so far.

Yo zuri an bomber seem to use what ever hook an split ring they have.i have seen yo-z's crystal minnows in the package with what looked like a 3/0 hook.before any plastic plug goes in my bag it gets a hook an s-ring overhaul.the hooks on a mag darter are VMC's but not a 4x hook.they won't hold up to a good fish or any pull.for the most part tho on the finish type plugs they get a size 4h or 5h Not sure who makes em butthey are the good ones.

Habs, trust me, I love that you put only the best into your plugs; finish, wood, wire, swivels, rings, etc... I just hadn't had the issue yet. To be honest, I am pretty suprised the rings haven't burned me yet. Like I said, I'll be switching over a lot of my rings to triples soon. Let me know when you order some next. I'd love to give them a solid workout this fall. Drop me a line this weekend if my other stuff is ready. I'll be in RI all weekend, then Cutty next Thursday.

im not surprised.. You know how to fish properly anyone who knows how to fish right shouldnt be opening up split rings.. if they are, they are ripping alot of bass lips. Thats what your drag is for Maybe if you hang up on a rock or something...

The only time i have even slightly bent a split ring was when i lifted one of Goosefish's mooses out of the water by grabing the needlefish..

I had it happened once on fish that was close to 30lbs, but that once was good enough for me. I dont like to loose fish even though sometimes theres nothing we can do about it. I do like to be prepared the best I can. Murphy's law that which can go wrong will go wrong.
