You guys seem pretty hard core..... which is a good thing in this case.

got an outfit question for you.. I found at a yard sale a Penn 712z that I bought for cheap money. I have a 9' penn Pursuit compost graphite rod I got for 20 bucks.

my question is this what would be the best line (manufacturer) weight (20, 25 # ? ) and so on.... my next question is what is the best way to go about rigging leaders.... leaders for plugs and so fourth and leaders for eels.

florocarbon, size of snaps and make, size of swivels if needed and make....

Well id go with powerpro line, i use 30lb. Then get ureself a spool of leader material, ande, etc, some spro swivles, and some duolock snaps.
Use a palomar knot to attach ure braid to the swivel(this knot wont slip with braid) tie a lenth of mono leader(around 3-4ft) then tie the leader to a duolock snap with a clinch knot. Ure good to go!

712z at a yard sale is a nice score! Bassboy was right on. IMO mono leaders are fine and save you $$$$.

Chris, go with braid, once you get used to it, you'll love it. First you have to make sure the real has a bearing on the line roller, braid will twist without it.
As far as leaders, for plugging I use 30-50# mono 18" long with a swivel on one end and snap on the other tied with Paomar knots. Eeling I tie 40-50# mono directly to the braid with an albright knot and snell on an 7/0 Gami circle hook. I can show you next time I see ya if you want.

you ride trials? saw the link, and looked a bit... Kudos to you, that is intense riding, at it's finest. must be in real good shape, as that taxes the body, and the machine.

Good score on the 712Z, BTW.

Some of the older penns are not braid friendly.

The 712 is a reel you'd use 10 or 12# test mono on. You'd never get enough 20 or 25# mono on it. Probably less than 100 yards.

Try 14# Fireline on it. It's very strong (breaks at over 30#) and you'll probably get most of a 300 yard spool on the reel. The older Penns don't do well with most braids, but Fireline works like a charm.

14# Fireline, stay away from the power pro. Like Mike said, its only rated for 180 yds of 10# mono. The 712 is a small reel, and probably wont balance very well on 9 foot rod, but you can likley make do with it. You'd be better off picking up a 704 for the 9 footer and putting the 712 on a 7 or 8 ft schoolie rod.

Sol, I use 12 lb trilene xt with a short 6" wire leader for blues 9' tica rod. That reel will handle fish well into twenty pounds, just keep your drag on the loose side. Haven't broke one off yet.

here is the deal... I took my ssg 550 and loaded it with power pro 30# and whaped it on the 9' er....

I took the 712z and put it on an 7' pinacle power tip... 29 bucks for the rod.... screw it... I'll mess with line next year for that rod.....
