Cassaboom Special
A number of years ago I played around with interpreting Salmon Flies for saltwater. This particular coversoin was pretty effective at night and in the summer doldrums with a sinking line when fished from a boat around structure....
The aslmon fly appears as it is normally tied.
I think I may try a few more of these interpretations this winter. One of my bets night time flies has been a convesion of a Jock Scott to a big flatwing.....
Cassaboom Special (fly is about 9 1/2” – 10” long, eye of hook to end of flash)
HOOK: 3/0 Eagleclaw #253
THREAD: Black
PLATFORM: Chartreuse Bucktail (30 hairs)
SUPPORT: Yellow upturned neck hackle (31/2”)
TAIL (in order of assembly):
Black saddle hackle about 6” long/gold flash
Black saddle hackle about 7” long/gold flash
Black saddle hackle about 8” long/gold flash
Chartreuse saddle hackle about 9” long/blue flash
Yellow saddle hackle about 9” long/purple flash
Chartreuse grizzly saddle hackle about 9” long
(Trim flash about 1” longer than longest hackle)
BODY: Gold body braid (wind between collars as you tie forward)
COLLARS/TOPPINGS: At tail tie very sparse collar of black bucktail, top with long black bucktail and golden pheasant crest
Half way up body tie a sparse collar of black bucktail, top with long black saddle hackle and golden pheasant crest
At head of fly tie sparse collar of chartreuse buck tail 3/4 around shank of hook, top with sparse black bucktail and golden pheasant crest, make collar ½ length of black collar.
Very sparse, very short collar of chartreuse bucktail
Two turns of webby bright yellow hackle
EYE: Jungle cock

Awsome Fly John, Your talent and creativeness never ceases to amaze me. I tied one of those up this year and while it was no where near the caliber of yours it was a fish catcher. Great color combo. Look forward to tying and learning a thing or two from you next year.

Sax, Hope to get down your way to a few of those Tuesday night tying sessions this winter. Maybe hit a saltpond or two as well, if the temps aren't tooooo cold.

Could be fun. Get some good ideas exchanged. Different being techniques shared. Visit old classic striper flies that still catch, etc.....

SD, That's great! here's another idea. Post a picture of a bait fish that's been taken underwater and tie a fly to match the baitfish...
