Back to Hand Carved

I started out carving bomber copies, then fought with a metal lathe to spin classic style plugs, now I'm back to carving. I really like the look and action of the turned plugs, but I have to work on my setup some before I turn more. I was getting 1 good plug out of 5 or so peices of wood and that's too much waste for my budget. Anyways, I tried this shape that I got off a dutch(?) pike site. It's 5" long and white pine. I'm only doing one at a time so I can play with the weighting and stuff until I get what I'm after. Right off the bat it's pretty good. I didn't weight this one at all, but with the hooks and splits off an a-salt it snakes along nice and tight with a little roll. It floats too high though, so the next one will have a slug between the lip and the belly hook. For what it's worth, using a knife and carving this out was very enjoyable.

I hung a regular a-salt next to it for scale. By the way, the weight between the two are pretty much identical(no scale, just balance beam).
