Secrets of COW BASS

It Seems over the years the same few Anglers produce Large Documented Bass, Why is this, Is it Luck or do they have the knowledge Kavorka. Some of these Anglers go back 30 to 40 years with consistent catches,But there seems to be a few New comers also.

There's a touch of luck but I think those that know know exactly where to place a plug along the shoreline to increase the likelyhood of it being inhaled by a big bass.

I was walking Cliff Walk today with a certain short but fiesty surfcaster. "Always cast at that rock where that whitewater is, that's where they hold. I caught my 55 there along with a lot of other big fish. Bait fisherman always do well here too." Knowledge and experience for sure.

Lots of homework and time and a 100 yard strech of shoreline gets distilled into just a few effective casting lanes, and that's always more productive then fan-casting.

I think knowing where the big fish hold is part of it. Experience and skill hooking and landing a huge fish is part of it.
Luck is always the unknown factor. If the fish are not there you arn't gount to catch them That's were the luck comes into play.

Living ten minutes from the beaches on the outer cape helps and being able to forgo the needs of the wife and kids and fish six out of seven nights helps a great deal. Once you get the read on the fish you can stay on them for however short or long a period the bass decide to grace the beach. These days out on the outer cape those days are few and far between. Being able to be Johnny-on-the-spot, besides being a halfway knowledgable striper fisherman puts it all together. Plus a little local hero worship gets you a call when others don't. Some big fish were caught that's for sure, but really there were not that many. If guys who caught the biggest were asked to compare fishing for large now to the late 70's, early 80's I am sure they would tell you it sucks now as to compared to then. Gotta be there when the fish are there, plain and simple.

Consistant producers,imho, do it by paying their dues in time on the water and years of experience.New comers do it more with luck.

Luck can put a good fish on the beach. Like the guys who, once a season on LI, take the family to the beach, toss out a chunk of frozen bunker and manage to put a 50+ on the sand.

Luck doesn't enter the equation for the guys who put both numbers and size in their logs every season

I know of a 52 lber. that was caught on an October afternoon from the Western Long Island Sound surf by a "Googan" who was using a long- shank/ wired leadered- Bluefish hook, and ratty piece of frozen Bunker tail bait... targeting Bluefish with a "crappy" rod & reel! THAT's luck!!

Mark M. taking a 64 lber. on a plug from Montauk Light on a rough Thanksgiving eve. night 15 years ago... or Iron Mikes' 60 & 50's from the surf also on plugs-- NO way that's "luck" at all!

I'll have to agree with flap...10 min's to beach,,20 min's to early, run home and have coffee, back in 15 to catch the perfect time.......other's spend MORE than 2/3 of their waking hours casing fish...course their going to catch more and larger fish. it's no different than anyone else that spend's all their time doing one thing reguardless of their interest, their going to be good at it.

Well I wish it was me, but for the last 2 years I haven't hardly got a 20 pounder. I think I am doing everything I should, I seem to be a day, week, or hour to late/ early for everything. only time will tell
I was going over my log for the last 2 years wondering what I could change. I figured I was on the beach/ rocks for 432 nights and days.

I think a lot has to do with having an old timer showing you the ropes and sharing hot spots with you.

Along with what you guys are saying about time on the water. There is also the point of numbers of fish you catch. For ever big fish these guys caught they probably caught many smaller fish. Finally with the numbers they land a big one.
This has to do with multiple big fish not the googan who with luck lands a big fish.
Sure there are spots where bigger fish can come from most deal where big fish have to congrugate. Spawning times would be one such time.

Fish hard where the big fish live. Live bait gives great advantages. Fish at productive times, nights, tide stages, moon and weather patterns. Use productive big fish lures with strong, sharp hooks. Be prepared for big fish with proper equipment to handle them. Use fresh line, leaders and terminal tackle. Learn to use the equipment,practice casting, swimming plugs. Keep a log to help develop productive patterns. Experiment and try new techniques. Fish areas that are less accessible to most anglers, dont be afraid to walk a little. Show the fish something different once and a while.
Don't chase second hand reports and most first hand reports.
